Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna Is Being Made To Bring Back Memories From ‘90s RPGs

Square Enix revealed Project Setsuna as Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna during the SCEJA Press Conference 2015 last night. This week’s issue of Famitsu magazine provides further details on the game being developed by Tokyo RPG Factory. [Thanks, Hachima.]

The contents of Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna are said to be something that will bring back the feelings that we got from ‘90s RPGs such as Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, and Chrono Trigger.

Events and battles happen in top-down perspective, while the game’s battle system inherits the ATB system from other Square Enix titles. The fields will allow you to travel and battle seamlessly without having any screen changes.

Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna is currently 60% in development, and will release for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in early 2016.

This week's Famitsu (of the time of this post) has 4 pages of SETSUNA coverage. A few things we learn:
- Main characters are Setsuna and a mercenary who protects her. Setsuna goes on a journey of sacrifice (no additional details)
- SETSUNA's battle system basics revealed
- There's something closely resembling the X-Cut/X-Strike (from Chrono Trigger) in this game

And here's a little streaming they had with the director of the game:

I fucking really like this. The combination of cold colours (the snowy environment) and warm colours (houses' interiors, characters' clothes, trees...) is just so perfect. Although I'm a sucker for wintery snowy settings, as they really remind me of my childhood in my grandparent's village in northern Spain, so yeah, I'm a bit biased.

The combat gives me a Chrono Trigger vibe, which is obviously the best thing in the world. I hope the combat is fun and deep; at least, it looks fast and seamless, which is about the only thing I can't really stomach anymore unless the transitions are really fast and the combat fun.

I like the characters' designs, too, as well as their game models. Even if they might not be the greatest designs, I like the red scheme on the girl and the arctic samurai vibe I get from the male character. They've said that there'll be more characters in your party, so that's cool.

Hopefully the game is long enough (and not a short experiment) and has a nice story (I really get a feeling of melancholy and sadness from the trailers, which could lead to something great). If everything goes alright, this could potentially be a new ongoing series, which is great since S-E really needs some of that fresh JRPG magic back.

So yeah, I really want and need something that gives me the same (or a similar) feeling I got growing up in the late 90s and early 2000s, and this is really close to that.

Even in a cold and snowy winter setting, a female character needs to be showing her boobs. And belly button. This design would also be much better without the crapton of ribbons and that thing on her head. She has nice color scheme, though.

Interesting, I completely agree with you on the questionable functionality of revealing clothing design even in a winter setting. However if she's going to be sacrificed, I can understand the beautiful ribbons and headpiece she adorns. Overall, I'm really liking the clothing designs seen so far, nice color scheme and ethnic decorative elements that is quite fresh to look at; The art style reminds me a bit of works by Yoshida Akihiko, which is one of my all time favorite artist!

So basically what Tokita's been doing for a decade? Lol.
Looking at his resume, he's done a lot of ports, remakes, mobile projects and other side stuff during the past 10 years. So no, not really.

I don't see anything on his resume that screams he created something similar to what Tokyo RPG Factory is aiming for and what Matsuda wants. If you grew up during the SNES era and played the RPG's that came out on the platform, you'd probably have a proper understanding of what they're trying to achieve here with Setsuna when it comes to what kind of impact those games had on people back in the day.

Final Fantasy IV 3D remake - was faithful and he was the best person for it.
Final Fantasy IV: The After Years - wasn't very good but still counts
Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light - brand new old school JRPG for DS
Final Fantasy Legends: Toki no Suishō - Heavily inspired by Chrono Trigger a game he was one of the directors for, even Alex got interested

So basically nothing Tokyo RPG Factory is aiming for and what Matsuda wants. They're not using the Final Fantasy brand and following any rules that comes with it. They're not remaking anything. They're not making a sequel or spin-off. They're not making something that targets the mobile market either.

They're trying to make a brand new IP with the ultimate goal of bringing back the memories players had during the SNES era. They're trying to recreate that experience but at the same time do their own thing. It's why they've assembled a team of people who have played and are skilled at SNES RPGs. People who have wanted to be developers thanks to those types of games.
