Because I know there are at least a few fans of it here and because it's starting to get a little more relevant again.

Tri is coming soon. New TV commercial in low quality:
I'm cautiously optimistic, like I have been since they announced it over a year ago. Not sure why, but the part where they hugged kinda reminded me of that one scene in Savers.

Also, the first five minutes of the movie have been online for a while now. I haven't watched it cause I'm waiting for the full movie, but here it is, also in low quality:
Apparently it starts with 02 kids showing up and promptly getting their asses kicked (which is obviously just an excuse as to why only the 01 kids are back in the spotlight).
The animation looks like it might not suck, so hooray. Also, according to Wiki, this first movie's runtime is 80 minutes. Dunno about anyone else, but I thought each one was gonna be like 30 minutes, so this is a nice surprise.

Also, Digimon Cyber Sleuth is coming out next year in English. This is the first Digimon game in a while if I remember correctly. I'm not an expert when it comes to Digimon games, but this looks interesting at least. Spoiler tagging to avoid clutter:

So what do you guys think? (inb4 red-haired girl turns out to be the villain)

Hey, I hadn't seen this thread. I'm excited for Tri myself, I did a rerun of Digimon Adventure and 02 a few weeks ago. I'm currently debating whether I should watch it subbed straight ahead or wait for the English (or better yet, Latino) dub. I refuse to watch stuff in Japanese, but Digimon holds a special place in my heart, which is why I'm undecided.

I just can't bear to hear more of the movie right now. It means I'm constantly reminding myself that I have to wait longer until the movie comes on Blu-Ray & DVD in the west...... Ughh....
Don´t worry Wazi, you won´t have to wait to long for the Blu-Ray & DVD release. If this becomes a trend, then the wait for the other movies won´t be hard.

You could always watch it with subtitles this weekend/next week/whatever and then again when it is dubbed in English/Spanish. No harm in that. I think that's what I'll be doing, as I want to see this movie multiple times. Maybe it's a little bit of a different story when it comes to the English dub though, since traditionally English versions of Digimon have been very different beasts when compared with any other version. I'd just watch it right away if I were you. Who knows when or even if this will get dubbed.

I'm also interested to see if they will find a way to bring back any of the original cast if they dub it into English. I'm not big on voice actors or anything (don't follow or keep track of them), but I can still remember what all the voices in Digimon 01 and 02 sounded like.

Why not just wait for the inevitable box set?

Jokes aside, I liked it very much as well.

- Animation was great, especially during the fight sequences (duh) and the sunset scene! The 3d cg in the evolution sequences looked pretty good too (I thought), but it seems they're deemphasizing evolution sequences. It's not like pervious seasons of Digimon have always shown every single evolution, but it was a bit jarring at the end when they had Weregarurumon in one shot and then Metalgarurumon in the next.

- Backgrounds looked fantastic too. Digimon has always used stylized backgrounds, and these are no different. They don't look like the ones in Adventure/02, but they have their own unique flair.

- I don't think I know exactly how to explain it, but the pacing of the dialogue reminded me a lot more of the Adventure/02 movies (especially War Game, and that's a good thing) than the TV series (which makes a lot of sense since this is a movie). I guess a lot of the banter/"humor" or whatever was kind of similar to the old movies. I do wish they toned down the "romantic" aspects a little, but I enjoyed the more lighthearted scenes nonetheless.

- Very interesting characterization for Taichi! Didn't know they'd go down that road, but it definitely made the film interesting and a little unpredictable, which was great! He seemed to get over some of his issues at least a little bit at the end, but I hope they elaborate on this and continue his character development throughout the six films. I bet most people don't like seeing him like this though, since it's such a complete turnaround from how he was before. It's not 100% accurate, but I guess you could say he and Matt kind of switched roles from how they were in Adventure 01.

- Speaking of Taichi, I think this is the first Digimon series in which the goggles are actually functional.

- The only character who I thought didn't look like himself was Joe. I think it's cause they changed the shape of his face quite a bit, but it could be something else. The funny part is that Joe was the one who sounded the most like his Adventure/02 self.

- For some reason I'm pretty glad they actually depicted the characters using 2005 technology instead of being all "Haha yeah it takes place in 2005 but everyone has a smartphone". Dunno why, but I thought they'd do that, and it would've irked me if they had.

- New girl was pretty uninteresting so far, but what I am interested in is learning how she and her partner (Meicoomon?) fit into everything that's happening. Though we don't really know anything about what's happening yet either, but that's ok since this first movie served mainly to reintroduce everyone (and some fanservice-y type things) and did a good job at it.

- Teacher/secret agent dude looks about the same age as the main kids for some reason.

- Enjoyed all the little (and not so little) references to previous series. Kuwagamon flying around like a madman, cooking eggs, Tai deliberating on whether or not to send part of the message to Sora, "One Vision" on Taichi's notebook at the beginning (Tamers), I thought I caught more while watching it, but I can't seem to remember now. Anyone else catch any little nods?

- I expected some rearranged music from Adventure/02, but I didn't realize how much I would enjoy it. The theme that plays when all the Digimon show up was just the best (it's the same one from when Tai goes back to the digital world in Adventure).

- Teenage Wolves > Knife of Day. C'mon Matt.

All said and done, very fun movie. I hope the next five films maintain the level of quality, though I'm guessing I'll judge the next one (whenever it comes out) a little more harshly than I did this one since I'll be done squealing like a fan girl by then... or maybe I won't be.

@Lulcielid @Wazi the pa Tri is a full 80 minute movie, but they split it up into "episodes" I guess to make it feel more like a TV series (since the originals were TV shows). I'm assuming that the theatrical version in Japan is all the "episodes" together. In fact, you can pretty much tell they just cut the "episodes" at every 20-ish minute interval since each one ends very abruptly.

Though the original poster for the movie was somewhat misleading to the actual animation provided but it wasn't to the point that it was a nuisance. It was acceptable.
I wouldn't exactly call the original posters and visuals misleading in regards to animation (can't telegraph animation with a still image very well after all), but it does look like they redesigned the characters (for the better, I'd say) since that first poster last year.

After rewatching it, this is my take from it is still a 8/10

- The animation wasn´t as spectacular as i remember, as far as pictures in motion (what animation is) goes, movie consists of mostly still shots and simple animation (simple like, walking, moving their limbs, moving a bit their heads and mouths and similars) and the fighting scenes were mostly zoom in-out of them brawling (said brawling been mostly composed of energy blast type moves). 7/10 in this department.

- The visuals are what i liked the most from the OVA, can´t say too much other than i like it. :D 9.5/10

- Surprisingly the music is barely noticeable outside from arrenges from DA1, for nostalgia and fanservice sake.

- The reasons for Taichi´s conflict is a bit iffy, he´s hesitant and concert in fighting as people and things would get hurt but, the plot itself does little to support this, as we barely see someone getting hurt other than Taichi imagining the possible sceneario.

- The stakes needs some work upgrade but this is excusable as this the first OVA and (hopefully) this will rise as the plot progesses.

- Something that i´m a bit 50/50 is the whole concept of Digimons attacking the human world ! The Digidestined will save it !! this conflict has been used a lot from Adventures01 to Fronteirs, so this will need and new take throughout the 6 OVAs.

- Daigo Nishijima is interesting.

- Meiko Michzuki is not, but she has 5 OVAs to go to prove her worth.

- Gatomon somehow is stronger now, no need to evolve at all....

- I know this is not new (secret org that studies/works with digimons) but, did we have it in Digimon02 ?

ScienceNonfiction said:
- Knife of Day > Teenage Wolves. C'mon Matt.
Fixed

- The chemiscry and emotional pay-off between the kids(now teenagers) and their digimons delivers.

- Outside of Tai and Matt, i hope the other gets some character arc in the remaining OVAs.

- After the rewatch i feel the need to do the same for Adventure 01 and 02.

Now that the first of six OVAs is out time to wait for the second one....

Extremely LQ image of the poster for the second Tri. film - “Determination.” The artwork shows the tentative release date (March 12), the ultimate forms of Mimi and Joe’s digimons - Rosemon and Vikemon, respectfully - and Imperialdramon.

He sees frightened people well within the vicinity of Kuwagamon's attack. I guess now that he's older he realizes that someone getting hurt or dying is a real possibility.

Sure.

Gatomon is adult/champion level.

Hmm... not that I remember. I'm guessing the organization we see here formed after the worldwide attacks in 02.

Awesome. I should have known the rest of the Digimon would get ultimate forms. If I remember correctly, Patamon and Gatomon already got ultimate forms in Golden Digimentals, so I wonder whether they'll use those in Tri or go for something new. Anyway, it's great that the next chapter seems to focus on Joe and Mimi, since they and their Digimon got the least screentime in Reunion. Poor Gomamon didn't even get an evolution sequence. And of course Imperialdramon implies Daisuke/Ken. I'm excited!

Forgot about that, when did Digimon started to stablish list power tier ?
Ever since the very first Adventure and probably even before that with the v-pets. Xros pretty much threw levels out the window though, and I guess so did Frontier.

Edit: 02 also disregards levels to some extent come to think of it. So I guess the only seasons that really adhere to levels are Adventure, Tamers, and Savers, and I think of those 3 Adventure focused on levels the most.

I hardly remember the show (adventure) dropping this terminology.

Edit: I should start rewatching all series (or read their wiki pages) to refresh my mind. I´ve heard that even the games have some weight in the lore of the franchise.

Yep, some of the games are fairly related. Hell, the fucking Wonderswan games of all things are heavily related to Adventure/02 and Tamers. I don't think it's anything too major, but I know they detail how the Ryo from Adventure 02 and the Ryo from Tamers are the same person and how he can travel between worlds (or some bs like that).

Nope, not really. You're better off just rewatching the TV series, as I've heard some of the games are pretty bad and probably a waste of time. And many of them were also never released in English and don't have fan translations as far as I know. I remember stumbling across a site a while back that had translated scripts of the Wonderswan games though. I can try and find it again if you're interested.

Thanks, then time to rewatch everything before march 12 !

If games are not needed then, dont bother doing it for me.
