Not all people so much invested in this game like we're, you know. For him probably its just another game.
Its like let me play Call of Duty or Battlefield or any other shooter game and after three weeks since i finished it ask me how much chapters there was. :D
You may have a good point there.

One would think it'd be easier to remember the number of chapters if it was the same as the title of the game, no? XD Especially since FFXIII did the same thing.

I'm a bit new to following game development and launch so didn't know about him and Edge magazine.

I have to say though I have read the article and he has gotten quite a few things wrong which is concerning.

The game being available on PC, Cindy being CID's daughter not granddaughter, and something about not knowing how many chapters he's played for sure despite investing 40 hours of his life into the game.

40 hours is a very long time. Not knowing these things seems a bit strange tbh.

There was something about him viewing the games ending, but then saying on Twitter he didn't play the final build and acknowledging some parts may be missing...

Not to be mean or anything but... this is quite troubling and a tad unprofessional.
I have to agree with Jub here guys, article was just poorly written in many cases even despite the author having a positive time with the game.

I guess that depends on how the chapters are relayed to the player. Could have been difficult to keep track of the chapters if the current was only revealed at the beginning of a segment, and if he didn't go through that many loading screens to begin with.

Chapter number and load screen takes up the entire screen every time a new chapter starts. It would be hard to miss it tbh since it's right there in front of your face because loading takes awhile.

His preview opinion is fine. Just very poorly expressed, which lead to mass confusion, which is awkward seeing as his job is a writer... :(

Simon Parkin writes for the New Yorker, and I take @APZonerunner's word that he's one of the best game writers around. The preview was quite strange in its structure and criticisms (see: board drama). We basically had to piece together SE and Parkin's responses at social media to piece together what actually he played.

What I gathered was he played 40 hours of a preview build with (large chunks of?) cut content, which could explain some of the story disconnect. And his description of the back half of the game invoked FFXIII PTSD in the fandom, but buried in the text was the word "traditional". But -- he also really liked the game! If this had been a review, I would have pegged it as an 8/10 - the same score Edge gave Witcher 3.

I wonder if, in spite of Parkin and EDGE's best efforts, the preview ended up needing to be pushed out the door at the last minute without being able to edit it to their usual standards. I mean, even setting aside the structure and the confusion its criticisms caused (which I suspect came in large part from people discussing the article without actually having read it), there were some typographical ("Sindy," "Statis") and fact-checking errors (listing the as-yet-unannounced PC version) that I doubt would have been left as-is with proper revision.

With that said, now that you've brought up Parkin's connection to the New Yorker, I can really see where the style for this preview might have come from. It's got the same sort of make-a-narrative-out-of-it impulse that I tend to associate with the New Yorker, at the very least.

I got the same feeling as you with regards to the score -- there seemed to be a bit more criticism than I'd expect from a 9, but the overall impression was positive, and there's no way the preview text would support a 7 on the low end when the bits I read of EDGE's 6/10 review for FFX completely excoriated that game.

Yep sound like a 8 review to me, and this is coming from the most critical games magazine. I expect 9s and 10s from other sites.

The author doesn't seem to be too invested in the game like someone above already stated but that's ok. The preview itself was more positive than negative and that should be the main gain from it. If you can't handle any criticism about XV you should better stay away from reading any upcoming reviews 'cause there'll be a lot of divisive ones even though I'm sure the game will generally be received really positive. No game is untouchable and you'll always find those who didn't like it/ didn't like the parts you personally may love. To make a long story short there's absolutely no need to panic, the game's out in a few days and you'll finally be able to form your own profound opinion.

Just noticed that I haven't posted here in a while, mhh.

Not to sound too harsh but as someone who doesn't know Simon or Edge that well at all, a fresh perspective would indicate that this person is an extremely poor writer.

All the facts and details should be present in the one article not pieced together like a jigsaw puzzle due to inconvenience.

Writing for a major outlet isn't indicative of someone who can write well. As someone who makes a living online, it's not all that hard to get featured or guest post on major sites if you play your cards right.

Anyway point is he was positive about it. So that's all that matters I suppose.

Welcome back!

I agree with the sentiment, and I'd say most everyone who posts here would say the same thing. There will be criticism - valid or otherwise - about FFXV. The issue -- and subsequent drama -- revolved around confusion about what the previewer played. This was the first glimpse of the game during the "linear" part - SE's kept the back half of the game under wraps (most likely for spoiler reasons).

As an aside, if SE is allowing these 15 - 40 hour previews, they must be very confident in what they have.

What's most telling to me is that they gave their first all-but-complete preview to EDGE, who's sort of infamous for being highly critical of RPGs due to a very heavy gameplay focus and hasn't rated a mainline FF (or even a re-release) higher than 7 since FFXII.

seems like FFXV is a 6-7 game for him based on preview imo.
You saw the quotes I found from Edge's FFX HD review, right? That was a 6 from EDGE. There's no way the FFXV preview is describing a game in the same category as that. XD

I don't believe storm meant that in a bad way imo.
6-7 is a bad to mediocre review. I personally think its sounds like a 8 review cause if you read the ffx review they demolished that game and they gave it a 6, this review was moslty praise and some negative stuff.

So the Edge previewer complete the game withing the 40 hour mark right?

How did he manage this? I'm coming up the 30 hours now on the demo lol

Its as if they rushed it and didn't really try to get the most out of it.
Didn't really experience what it has to offer in full.

Forgive my ignorance on this since I'm not actually reading any previews of the game.

Could just be me looking at it from a 'FF fan' perspective and maybe the previewers not as eager about the game. I want to enjoy the game to the fullest. Take my time. Really get immersed by every feature the game has. Observe all the fine miniscule details within its world.

I can't see myself beating the game in just 40 hours xD
