What is confusing is they use statements like:

"fastest-selling title in the series" Which gives off a " Units sold vibe

Then they add in:

Shipments that so happen to be combined with " Digital" sales. How do you even "ship" digital copies of the game? Aren't they 100% transaction? Shipments usually means Publisher----> Distributor. There are quite a few statements in their when combined, it sounds contradictory.

Though I feel 80-90% of those shipments are pre-orders. Distributor company don't buy way over the amount they actually need do they? Maybe an additional 10-20 copies per store.

UK sales: It's the second fastest-selling/highest-selling FF launch ever, behind FF13.

Direct numbers haven't been released, but It's under 170k (FF13's number) for week one but above 100k (which is what FIFA, which beat it to #1 in the charts, sold). I think it'll be around the 130k mark. These are pretty good numbers.

FF12 did 90k. FF13 did 170k.

EDIT: Further clarity from GIBiz:
Digital data isn't included, but in terms of boxes, it is the second-fastest selling game in the series' history - beaten only by 2010's Final Fantasy XIII. If you combine the early performance of this with the new Skyrim remake (which has been one of this Christmas' more successful launches) and it's been a strong quarter for the RPG genre.

Square Enix's challenge will be to maintain Final Fantasy XV's early performance. The game has an avid hardcore fanbase, and typically titles of this type tend to do well in their debut week, but fall away quickly after that. As a means of comparison, unit sales of Final Fantasy XIII fell by 80 percent in its second week back in March 2010.

Despite the initial success of Final Fantasy, the game didn't quite manage No.1 - the seemingly unstoppable FIFA 17 continues to hold its position at the top of the charts. The game's sales dropped 42 percent after its successful Black Friday activity. EA will be pleased that the game has passed 2m in record time. To put that into context, no other UK game this year has passed 1m sales (yet).

This FIFA 42% figure will help us to calculate a ceiling of FF15's maximum possible sales in the UK, too, as we know FIFA's figures from the previous weeks. Will edit or post again when those numbers have been crunched.

i assume with digital sales it might have reached numbers similar or at least close to XIII?

don't know how strong digital sales are over there.

curious to see how's the game doing on NA.

Digital sales has become dominant across the world, UK included. Not surprising when you see how slim the pickings can be in physical stores and the improvement of internet connectivity.

We sadly won't get any deeper accuracy than this, but number crunching now confirms FF15 sold more than 90k but less than 135k in the UK week one. This doesn't include digital.

FF13 did 170k, so it is down, but it's still very good. So aye.
The fact that the game sold this much after the franchise was tarnished by the 13 trilogy is nothing short of amazing.

Like you said, it's very good :)

Digital sales aren't "dominant", but are prolific. On average you can expect a console game to pick up around 15-20% more sales digitally based on the statistics, though for some games - especially those with an online focus - this has approached as much as 40%. It's still far from becoming the dominant force though.

FF15 is between 115 and 135k. We know this. You can probably expect to get that to around 140-160k - so it'll fall shy of FF13, but not by an enormous amount. The question for FF15 is if it can maintain sales; FF13 had a 70% drop-off from week 1 to week 2 in the UK.

Those are great numbers for a JRPG coming off the market saturation of a trilogy of a lukewarm game. SE must be very pleased, not only in the UK but worldwide too.
They really are. They probably indicate that SE's dream of Witcher 3/Skyrim/FF7 numbers again is out of reach, however, but FF13 might prove to be a good 'floor' for the series - unless things go wrong, they can safely assume they can shift 5-7 million copies of main entries soundly, which is good.

I'm sure they have dreams of WRPG-type numbers -- it was a stated goal of Tabata's. The more important thing -- for me -- would be meeting projections SEH communicated to investors. They could be lower than we would think; it's not entirely out of the equation that they would cut their margins in the console space to strengthen the brand for their mobile games. And more importantly for us -- we'll get a FFXVI.

with a PC port they could get close to their "dream" goal.
I'll certainly double dip. I've been loving my time through the game the first time and I'd absolutely love to do it all again on a nice rig if it's properly done.

But, I don't think in the long run, it'll be all that significant. I don't think it'll be even in the millions. I could be totally wrong, though. Now that I've got the game, I don't care about their sales anymore :p

If they release an all inclusive edition of the game that comes with all the DLC and expansion packs, then I'd buy it again.

I like collecting physical copies of games.

Generally these sales targets cover one version -- IE if they do a later PC release, they will forecast their sales goals for that separately, which is what they've done for FF13. Internally, they even still track the difference in sales between vanilla FF7 and later releases on PC, PS4, mobile etc.

The "dream goal" isn't a sales target, though. Given that Tabata clearly intended the 10mil goal to imply that the game's overall reception would be competitive with FFVII's, I think lifetime sales would satisfy it.

Final Fantasy has been on a decline in Japan before the mobile boom happened but it was a gradual one.

Going from FFXIII to FFXV though is pretty big.

FFXIII did 1.5 million in its first week.
FFXV did 690K in its first week.

PS3 just before FFXIII came out was at 4 million.
PS4 just before FFXV came out was at 3.6 million.

The hardware gap is not that big. We could blame mobile but I think Japan is showing that they're not as interested in the brand today like they were in the past.

And then we have success stories like Splatoon, which show that Japan can still care about console gaming I think.

I have read from others that the hardware gap was much bigger than that. Does anyone know a reliable source? I'm seeing wildly different numbers out there.

Smart post. Pair this with smaller franchises like Persona and Tales seeing growth and record sales on new hardware and a picture is painted, obviously.

@DrBretto It's pretty easy to find the numbers, honestly; a 2-second google got me to a press release from Sony celebrating 3 million PS4s shipped in Japan as of July, and then if you take each month's sales since and add them together - readily available from Media Create - you can reach that 3.6/3.7m figure.

PS3 passing 4 million in Japan was also celebrated with a press release.
