I have an idea as to what this is, but it's only speculation so should not be taken as fact.

Considering the fact that Noctis woke up on Angelgard after his slumber, I'd say that this place is a prison for Royalty members related to the Lucis line.

The opening line for the chapter even says that this is a prison too.

Those swords could've been used as a part of a "sealing" ritual put in place to make sure that the "imprisoned" stayed there.

Personally, I think the Astrals and the King who betrayed Ardyn locked him here for awhile, before he somehow managed to escape.

Bahamut's sword being there would indicate this as well. The Astral's and Line of King's would've worked together to seal the "Usurper"

When you're ostracizing and demonizing someone, you gotta imprison and keep them somewhere right?

Seeing as how Ardyn likes to "help" Noctis so he could further his own ambitions, I'd say Ardyn knew Noctis was gonna wake up on Angelgard due to past experience, so he made sure to park the boat there so Noctis had a way to come back after he woke up.

That's just my take on it but I think it makes sense.
I see things a little bit differently, due to this obscure bit of concept art:

That's obviously a previous concept for the inside of the cave at Angelgard which incorporates swords as seen in that unused section of the island. It seems pretty clear that the place where Noct woke up was intended to be substantially similar to its current form even during the concept art phase.

For the record, I think there's something very sepulchral about the "stone prison." For one thing, there's no meaningful way to bar the door. If anyone was held there, it would almost certainly be in the built-up stone structure at the back, and that appears better suited for a lifeless body than a conscious prisoner.

My own suspicion about the place is this: since it is said that Ardyn was specifically denied ascension, Angelgard could be the temporary resting place for the bodies of those who are taken into the heart of the Crystal (hence the name, "Angel guard"). Maybe the idea is that Ardyn's body was bound there after being denied ascension.

The place in the glitch seems a little bit different, though. It's not entirely implausible that a body could have rested on that slab of stone, but there's a chunk of Meteor in it that'd make it pretty unlikely. I have to wonder whether the Meteor chunk itself is what was being bound by Bahamut's swords, given the connection between the Meteor and the Starscourge.

As for Ardyn leaving Noct the boat, I'm not sure that's necessary. There's no reason why Noct's friends couldn't have figured out that there was a connection between the Crystal and Angelgard, especially since they made sure that there was a note waiting for him to tell him to go to Hammerhead when he got back. It's Noct's boat, after all.

It's definitely very interesting no doubt.

Never thought of it from the sepulchral angle before, which is very interesting.

I've always thought of it as a prison because when Noctis wakes up, it said "Angelgard Prison", which I found surprising since I was asking myself "Why is Noctis in prison?!?"

I was under the impression that Noctis was taken, both body and soul, into the crystal, seeing as he disappeared completely after Ch13.

As for the boat being anchored on the shore of Angelgard, I don't see how the bros would have come to the conclusion that Noctis would've woken up there unless Ignis and Talcott dug up some juicy info and learned of that. As someone is intimately involved in the workings of the world since he was there since the very beginning, meaning Ardyn would be well versed in the mythology of the Starscourge, the King of Light, and the minor details of the prophecy,I'm more of the thought that Ardyn pre-empted Noctis's return to be on Angelgard and parked it there on purpose.

It's always been known that Umbra could find Noctis no matter where he was. The bros didn't know where Noctis was, but they believed that if anyone could find him, it would be Umbra.

I wonder... in response to your remark about the Meteor and Bahamut's swords surrounding it... could this have been the place where the Starscourge originated from? Where that fragment of meteor housed the parasites and Bahamut saw fit to seal that particular fragment and isolate from the rest of the continent by creating an island around it?

The colour and make of rock for Angelgard is similar to the rocks created in Taelpar Crag from the astral war.

It's all speculation of course, and I could be entirely off the mark completely. It's leading to an interesting discussion so I'm pleased about that at least =P

Btw, remember when someone glitched to the Angelgard island where Noctis wakes up and there was this strange cave with the huge swords around it, which people assumed would be where Episode Gladio would take place because of who the boss in the DLC was revealed to be? Turns out it wasn't. Wonder what that's supposed to be.

Those swords might be related to Bahamut, incidentally Noctis wakes up on Angelgard after his interaction with Bahamut and the hyperbolic time crystal. Tenebrae also has similar giant swords around the area, the cosmogony mentioned that Bahamut descended down to the mortal realm to give a pios maiden at Tenebrae his trident and for her line to become the Oracle line so maybe those giant swords being at Tenebrae is a similar thing to the ones at Angelgard.

Well going by what was posted in the general thread, no Ardyn DLC.

If it's gonna be added in the main game, then highly unlikely we'll be able to play as him, or explore past Eos since the central focus will still be on Noctis.

Tbh I thought they were gonna tell it through a DLC since they have more opportunity to go into detail there in 1-3 hours, and there's also the question of where to place his story within the main game (unless it's gonna be in a certain chapter I'm thinking of)

I just hope they don't make it too short and uneventful since they can't take away too much time from Noctis after all.

Edit: now we play the waiting game and see if it's gonna be announced as a separate DLC or added into the main game.

Ardyn could be playable at some point. He was among the characters running behind Noctis in the NIVIDIA tech demo shown previously.

Just because it says "prison" doesn't necessarily mean that the the term feels appropriate for the place. ;) It seems pretty clear to me that even if the place was used as a prison in the past, that wasn't the reason why Noct awakened there.

Noct was definitely taken body and soul into the Crystal, for what it's worth. The question is how his body ended up on the other side of the world by the time he woke up. I didn't get the impression that Ardyn fished him out and stuck him on Angelgard, so it seems fair to assume that the Crystal itself put him there somehow.

If the Crystal had done the same thing to Ardyn as it had Noct, it's entirely plausible that Ignis could have found out about it in his research. On the other hand, I see no reason why Ardyn would have had access to the Lucis Caelum family yacht, especially since the bros almost certainly needed to use it to get back to Lucis.

But, yeah, Umbra could have found Noct regardless of whether the bros knew where he was. XD;

It'd be pretty weird for the Starscourge to have originated from a place with a tiny portion of Meteor very far from the main body of the Meteor itself, wouldn't it? It's not like Angelgard is positioned in a way that it could have plausibly been broken off from the Disc of Cauthess area of Duscae. That tiny bit of Meteor could be the source of the Scourge, of course, but if it was, it seems more like it'd have been moved from its original location to a new chunk of land rather than having the land moved under it. Then again, Angelgard definitely gives the impression of Astral-modified land given how fantastic its structures appear.

Yeah, this sort of speculation is fun to engage in regardless of whether it ends up being confirmed or not. ^_^

Appearently the english text in the loading screen of E:G has exclusive information that´s missing in all other languages.
Dan Inoue is credited as both English localization director and main writer. I suspect that he's the reason why the English translation is allowed to differ heavily in terms of content -- he's one of the people who gets to decide what's canon in the first place, so there's nothing stopping him from revealing different aspects of the mythos in English if he feels it appropriate.

Ah I should've been more clear.

Didn't mean to say that Noctis was fished out by Ardyn. He came back to Eos somehow, but definitely not by any help from the Accursed that's for sure lol

Despite that, I do think he put the boat there on purpose though.

Why did Noctis wake up there...? Honestly it's anyone guess at this point until we have more info.

Yeah you're right. That fragment is too small a piece for the Starscourge to have emerged and wrecked havoc. Just raises more questions as to why it's there in the first place.

Just finished beating Cor.

Final Trial with Cor is my favorite battle in FFXV, followed by
the final set piece of the game fighting Ifrit then Ardyn.

Cor was challenging, but boy was it thrilling and exciting.

More battles like this please Square.

its such a minor thing, i think is reasonable to use a bit of imagination here.

after succeding his trial he went to lestallum to look after noctis, then was told about the problem in the plant and decided to help.

the end.

^ Agreed. The DLC was pretty much intended to keep strict focus on Gladio's adventure within the trial itself anyway, which was more relevant to his character than the power plant stuff, which wouldn't require a lengthy explanation.

I kind of feel like the story of this DLC is focused more on Cor than Gladio, to be honest... but I'm okay with that.

It had been mentioned before that "Cor the Immortal" was as much mockery as reverence, but it's still pretty cool to find out that Cor earned that nickname by facing down certain death as a hotheaded teenager and cutting off the arm of a 2,000 year old ghost knight before getting chucked unceremoniously out of the trial chamber, still alive.

I also like how Clarus decided that it made no sense for someone whose duty was to guard the king to take his own life cheaply enough to undertake a deadly trial with no guarantee of a reward, because that just seems like good sense to me.

ouch, is the dlc really that average? even neogaf was praising the dlc a bit, and for 5 bucks it seems like a much better deal than most dlcs out there (it's cheaper than persona 5 cosmetic dlcs)
My main issue personally is the length of it for the price. I've seen a lot of "But it's only $5" but seriously The Witcher 3: Blood & Wine was about 10-15 hours long and was $10... or even one of the Mass Effect DLCs - things like Overlord, Stolen Memory or The Price of Revenge for ME2 were all $6 and are all drastically more substantial. I'm disappointed in the scope of it more than anything. It's difficult to recommend.

thought blood and wine was more like an expansion, but damn that price is good and even cheaper than DS3 dlcs (that generally gives 5 hours worth of content).

anyway, my stance toward the updates really line up with destructoid's review:

"As someone who absolutely loved every member of the bro-trip party, I was hoping for a little bit more from the first major round of Final Fantasy XV DLC. The game has already received a ton of fantastic free updates, but so far the "Episode" format seems to be something all of us should enjoy in the Game of the Year edition, and not piecemeal."
