Well luckily the old games, were great story rich complete experiences at least the best ones of course. Then XII-XIV happened. That didn't overpromise and under-deliver Also the problem with FFXV isn't just that it's unfinished, no the game is lacking regardless of it being finished or not. Unlike VI, VII, VIII, IX, X
FFXII and FFXIII felt like complete experiences to me (that doesn't mean i think they are masterpieces or anything), the same is true for FFXIV: ARR (not the original); so i disagree with you for the most part, and i just think we have different definitions of what "complete" is.

Ignoring the rest where I said XV is lacking regardless of it being finished or not. Unless the previous greats. XIII is mediocre garbage, XII is alright so far.

Quality wise after 10
Sales wise it never died.
Though when it does whether people will be happy or sad about that, I don't know.
it might be lower quality if we go in numbers (like metacritic), but its not even a huge gap to justify "it's dead" comments, they are still great games either way.

which just shows how the hyperbole really can turn ppl into irrational trolls, and im pretty sure there were ppl justifying FF being dead using sales as an argument.

it was funny.

edit: for the post below, see critics and user scores.

All over
FFXV made money, and that should make everybody happy who wants to see the series continue.

Recall that Tabata's GDC presentation was "Final Fantasy - A Challenger Once Again" -- challenger being the operative word. Whatever the faults of the game (and use other threads for any and all assertions-as-fact whining) The fact that SE reported record-high revenue and profits tell me that -- in addition to pulling a failed project to a 6M+ selling game -- BD2 also built a better development pipeline that hopefully will pay dividends in the future.

Arguing metacritic aggregate scores alone is a horrible measure at entailing a detailed, accurate description of a what a game does right/wrong.

Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne (82), Suikoden 2 (82), and Parasite Eve (81), ALL three RPGs considered classics scored low 80s (worse than FFXIII's 83). Does that suddenly devalue their actual quality? Not at all.

There is more than enough evidence to conclude that despite a vocal hysterical group saying otherwise, FFXV has a lot of fans who genuinely enjoyed their time with it in spite of issues. Theres no need to drag this out when S.E. is in a far better position than they were last gen moving forward.

You know none of those RPGs have apart from Nocturne a good number of reviews hell one of them has 8 reviews. When people use metacritic to compare FF titles they are at least close to each other when it comes to number of reviews.

"There is more than enough evidence to conclude that despite a vocal hysterical group saying otherwise, FFXV has a lot of fans who genuinely enjoyed their time with it in spite of issues." Yeah and a great majority of them saying the story is messed up, looking at the past trailers and wishing damn, I wish I had this game, and disappointed in the game as a whole like it but can easily see the WASTED potential

"Theres no need to drag this out when S.E. is in a far better position than they were last gen moving forward"
Until they can tell stories like they did in the past, I see no reason not to, in other words, I'll believe it when I see it, but that Games as a Service thing really has been scared because to me it translates to we don't care if we rush games out the door, we will sell DLC anyway.

Not to beee aaaaa pwartyyy pooooper... but I really don't understand people, rather perspective has become relatively picky.

70, 80, 90, they are all good numbers to indicate quality. It's liiiiike these dayssss if something isn't 90 then it's shite. Not that critic reviews really mean anything. Hundreds if not thousands of consumer reviews are more credible than just one person who spent a couple hours on a game.

I know this much. For FFXV to get the ratings and sales that it got is still a huge accomplishment (even more so give the turmoil it has gone through). Even though FFXV doesn't vibe with a good number of people, there should also be an understanding that it's much more difficult to satisfy every single person now and these days because the gaming community is much more diverse. If a product tries to satisfy everybody, it may in the end satisfy nobody.

SQEX admitting that XV won't and hasn't pleased everyone is also a good sign. Back during the seventh-gen era, they got burned too many times by trying to appeal to a broad market, or just assuming everyone would continue to love and respect their brands no matter where they took them or how long each entry took to make. High risk policy to say the least. That they've pulled XV and many of their general brands from the brink, turned XV into a critical and commercial success, and recognised that not ignoring video game niches can be profitable is (I think) a good sign.

But XV does try to please everyone, it is definitely a game that doesn't really commit to anything.
It's an open world game, yeah but it's open world is shite, they wanted to do it to appeal to a mass market
It tries to be an action RPG, worse combat than a lot of Square Action RPGs, not to mention the boss fights, then there is a the wait mode to appease the turn based fans
Story wise, it tries so hard to be Versus XIII, but it's not, it doesn't commit to that either, to the point where people have said yeah they should have just scrapped Versus and started fresh
XV is a game that tries to appease everyone, but doesn't do it well.

Persona 5 is niche, that is a game that doesn't try to please the lowest common denominator, it commits to it's vision, and sticks to it, doesn't try to be many things as once.

Hell Nier Automata does this, but applying that to XV? No.

Funny enough, i looked at a review thread on Horizon Zero Dawn, which countless people begging for it's metascore to hit 90+ when it was hovering between 88-89. It was headache inducing from just reading posts.

Hmm. I think this just goes to show that fans of games like to use metascores either as arsenal to defend the game as the best thing ever made, or to curb stomp it because "low"'scores equate to a "bad" game.

So extreme either way...

I find the people who don't put too much stock in scores to be more level headed.

Scores are iffy, because there is no universal judgement system for them. Some people base their ratings on enjoyment while others will be more technical. Some scores can also be influenced by bias for the better or worse. At the end of the day, I think a person's own experience with something should be held to have the most value to self.
