I think it's a little silly that people term only games with some form of turn-based combat to be an RPG.
I wasn't implying this at all. Game genres are defined by gameplay. And Zelda for instance doesn't feature RPG gameplay systems such as leveling.
It's raw action driven adventure.

In regards to RPGs based in action, the prime example is of course Kingdom Hearts. The key differences between Zelda and Kingdom Hearts are obvious.

I think it's a little silly that people term only games with some form of turn-based combat to be an RPG. To be perfectly honest, the idea that a game based in action can't be an RPG is one of the most soul-crushing opinions I've seen in gaming. As someone who is well versed in Pen-And-Paper RPGs which largely predate video games, a game like Legend of Zelda or something with character creation is the purist form of RPG out there. You create your own character and fill them up with your own thoughts and ideas, and even when their appearance is decided for you (as with Link) that sense of "I'll make him be what I want" is still pretty prolific.

Games with spoken lines or fully established personalities are RPGs too, of course, but a very different kind. It's the difference between improv and a script; Both are still acting and filling a role, even if their source methods are fundamentally different. That's why we have terms like TBRPG, ARPG, SRPG, PRPG, etc. It's not quite as eyeroll worthy as the WRPG/JRPG debate, but it's pretty close.

I just wanna fukken have fun.
Agreed

In 2013, the only upcoming RPG at this point I know I am going to play is Ys Memories of Celceta. In early 2014 I will probably eventually try out Lightning Returns, but not before FFX Remaster and Bravely Default if those are hitting around the same time.

For now, all I'm planning on getting at some point in 2013 is the new Ys game. I'm somewhat interested in the new Pokemon and Etrian Odyssey, and some things in 2014, but that's about it.

And so Aurora doesn't feel alone in the previous debate, I also don't really define Zelda games as RPGs. :p

Good games there.

Thats fine. I have reached a point in my internet life. I not only accept disagreements in debates. I welcome them.

I'd say Pokemon, but that just arrived and so I'm now no longer really looking forward, per se!

In terms of things that are fully announced (so discounting things like Persona 5), the thing I'm most looking forward to is The Witcher 3. I've seen that game in person now twice, and everything about it blows everything else I've seen real-time of every other RPG out of the water, and by a long, long way.

On the outside I'm really looking forward to finding out what Persona 5 is, and I think Lightning Returns looks pretty cool, even if only in a sort of academic "I wonder what this really is/how it'll do" sense. I'm cautiously curious about Dragon Age: Inquisition, and massively excited for the next Mass Effect, whatever it may be.

I could have gotten pokemon. But with sen no kiseki. Priorities.

The Witcher 3 is the only "western" rpg that looks really good to me right now

Not really keen on getting into the what-is-an-RPG/RPG semantics discussion at the moment, so here are the RPGs I'm looking forward to from the top of my head, and in no particular order:

1) Tales of Symphonia Chronicles - I've never played a Tales game before, much less have dabbled with Symphonia for the Gamecube. I know someone who claims the Tales games have been awful lately, and the last good one was Symphonia, so haha, guess this one is as great place to start as any. xD

2) Next Deus Ex game - please don't mess it up, please don't mess it up, please don't mess it up, please don't mess it up. The Deus Ex Universe thing makes me think of Fabula Nova Crystallis. And that's not really a good thing at this point. I'm also picturing a horrific dystopian future full of EA Dead Space 3-like microtransactions now and everything...

3) Dragon Age 3: Inquisition. Skipped 2, played the heck out of Origins, and here I am hoping that this will be a return to form for BioWare.

4) Next Mass Effect. This will be a while off yet, but I can wait. The ending to Mass Effect 3 isn't enough to make me want the franchise aborted, because I still want more of my sci-fi RPG fix.

5) South Park: The Stick of Truth. About time they disclosed a release date. Bring it on.

6) Final Fantasy XV. Now we just need Square to actually finish the game before 2017 rolls in and turn those target renders into actual in-game assets!

7) Cosmic Star Heroine. What RPG fan would not want to try this one out?

8) Bravely Default: Where the Fairy Flies. Yes, that is the subtitle.

I am also interested in The Witcher 3, but I've never played the first two games. Lightning Returns is there as well, because I'm actually cautiously - and curiously - optimistic for it, despite not liking the other FFXIII games.

EDIT: Bugger, I forgot X. But I've no plans to get a Wii U though...

In terms of RPGs, I'm looking forward to Lightning Returns. Yeah, that's about it for now. I try not to want things that I have a limited chance of getting, and I'm really on the fence about getting a PS4 at all, so KH3 doesn't count. I'm under 17 and I actually bother to look at ratings (*gasps*), don't have any systems other than a PS3 and a PSP (the computer I use for games is dead), and the Tales games aren't quite my style, so yeah, that's about it.
