I thought I'd start this as it's a topic all its own. And here we go!

Within 24 hours of release, according to a press announcement by Square Enix, the game has already sold/shipped five million copies worldwide counting both physical and digital sales. This makes it the fastest-selling title in the series to date. It has set sales records in Japan and Asia, and continues to sell strongly in its release regions (North America, Latin America, Japan, China and Europe).

THE FOLLOWING IS NOT FROM THE PRESS ANNOUNCEMENT, BUT MY OWN OPINION: If it's sold just five million in one day, imagine where it could be within six months, or a year. Even with the expected sales declines with new releases. In any case, it's blown all previous records set for the series, and indeed many other RPGs or games in general, out of the water.

As of March 2010 (Western FF13 launch), FF13 shipped 5.5 million copies. It barely went on to sell 500,o00 beyond that in its lifetime. (and then was pepped up by PC)

Anyhow, my point is: Remain calm and don't get the champagne corks popping until the actual sales data of units sold comes in. I'm very hopeful though!

Where does the 500K data come from? In all articles I read about XIII sales they only mention either 6M shipped or 6M sold.

If you dig into financials and stuff you'll find FF13 on PS3/360 settled at around 6.3m, but the steam release and stuff have now pushed it to 7-ish.

My point is merely that, y'know, you can ship a lot and still struggle. We'll know more with UK and Japanese actual raw sales data next week!

Slight couterpoint to all that is that sales are generally measured by number of units shipped. I never understood why, but it's the same scale at least. IMO, that number is still valid. The warning to not get too excited about how many that WILL turn into is totally valid of course, but there's no reason to nullify the opening numbers. It's not like they can just ship however many they want, the stores still need to buy them.

Anecdotal to say the least, but I do know of at least one person who didn't pre-order but was not able to find a copy in two different gamestops, but I imagine there will be more made available when unchecked preorders are put on the shelves.

The stores need to buy them, but how these contracts work is that if sales don't pan out the publisher is obligated to refund stock - buy it back, or offer retailers a portion of their money back so that the game can be heavily discounted. This happened with FF13, which was overshipped (this is why you could get FF13 for a third of its original price after four months) and was quite damaging to the bottom line. This is why over-shipping can be as dangerous as under-shipping, if not more so. Hopefully FF15 is selling well and adequately stocked though.

I know how it works. I was just saying that it can't just be dismissed. There's no indication either way whether it's overshipped or not. This is the only data we have and it's OK to talk about it without 50 people trying to dismiss it as if no one has ever heard of the difference between shipped and sold. I imagine most people are fully aware of the difference. Maybe I'm giving people too much credit or something, but it comes off like people are trying to expose the article as a sham or something.

Well, truth is people shouldn't dismiss it and they shouldn't celebrate it either because, yes, shipped is worthless in the end. It goes both ways. We'll get actual sales next week, anyway.

That's kind of my point. I don't have as issue with one or two people letting someone know to calm their expectations if they are actually showing signs of not understanding it. What is obnoxious is when every reply to these kinds of topics is the same "oh, that's shipped not sold" comment. We all get it. But, that's how they are generally reported and that's all the info we have to talk about. We can still talk about what's in front of us. It was the same thing during development when people were talking about the map size. Every time that subject go brought up, every conversation about inevitably turned into a couple of people telling people to calm down about the size, even though no one was getting all crazy about it in the first place.

It's not just this game, it's not just this place. Every single time sales numbers come up, there are more posts from more people trying to inform everyone else this same thing, and people can't just talk about the actual topic. It's obnoxious. No one needs to "hold their horses" because no one was going off the rails in the first place.

Saw this on GAF. Tracking in-line with Skyrim remake in the UK.

Publisher Square Enix says that Final Fantasy XV has topped 5m units in digital sales and worldwide shipments.

The figure was achieved in just one day, making it the biggest opening day in the franchise's history, although actual sell-through numbers are currently unknown. UK physical retailers told GamesIndustry.biz that the game has had a solid start, and that it is tracking in-line with the recent Skyrim remake.

From Siliconera, Final Fantasy XV is the fastest-selling game in the series:

Before FFXV that was FFVIII, right?
Not to call victory here, but these news are a good sign.
I hope this lights a bit of a fire under their butts to release FFVII:R next year and start work on FFXVI immediately, and make sure it doesn't take 10 years to release. More like, 3 years at the most.

Or... If we're super unlucky they see this as a sign to proceed with a FFXV-2... Oh no... (´・ω・`)

I'd much prefer they take this as a sign to "let's add more content to the base game" instead of FFXV-2 lol

More DLC stuff is welcome of course. Love the universe and characters in this game.
