FFXV currently has a total of 8 GOTY awards (ironically the same total amount that Wind Waker got!)

This is without the several additional "RPG of the Year" Awards it received, which would technically make the award count higher when combining the two (ditto for the other awards on different categories in general).

In comparison, FFXII only had 2 GOTY awards in it's respective year, while FFXIII had absolutely none.

Great news for the franchise.

I find surprising Overwatch not taking the N1 spot though.

Fantastic that the game has won so many awards.

Question to those who played Overwatch: is it really that good of a game? I haven't played it so I don't know much about it.

However I have been coming across conversations where people are surprised FFXV beat it.

Is it really that good?

FFXV is flawed yes but it's still a great game. So Overwatch must be something else for people to be continually surprised by its loss?

I have not touched Overwatch, but I have watched a close friend play it. Overwatch imo is a great game, but it is a multi-player only game. If you were to do rank matches, especially PC side, the toxicness only increases with the tiers. So your experience with Overwatch can end up being heavily impacted by the people you end up playing with.

The short version of the USG interview posted in the Versus XV thread, so i'll share the full version of it here.

Regarding Cor:

So while we kept Cor in the game, he takes on a different role than he did before, more of a mentor, if you will. So as a character, he's relatively the same. It's only his position and presentation in the game that changed between Versus XIII and XV."
Basically he's still the same character as before, right down to material, just repurposed as a guest party member.

Reason for party switch removal:

Tabata explains: "If rather than only controlling Noctis, users were able to control four or five characters-say, the four guys and then Cor, for example-it would be really hard to bring all five of those characters and the way that they feel to the same level of satisfaction as one character, given the time restrictions, budget limits, and so on.
On the state of the game:

"This was our first time developing a title for this cutting-edge hardware, for the PS4 and Xbox One. And because we are not gods, there were a lot of bugs that came up. We had to deal with those, and the optimization process proved to be pretty difficult. But all things considered, we were still able to release the FFXV that we had envisioned."
"It's not that users have an incomplete version of the game and that we're filling in the gaps now. Rather, we've already released the complete version of the game, and what we're doing is simply enhancing that experience for people, or providing different styles of play for characters. And again, this comes back to the point of Noct being the main character, the only playable character.

Thanks Nova. Anybody that has kept up with this project knows that while the Luminous Engine is a very powerful engine, it has also been very difficult to develop on. I feel Tabata touched on that yet again in this interview. I'd like to see the engine being used again on a future project once it does reach its maximum potential.

"I was actually working on a different console title at the time that I was moved over to rebrand Versus XIII to XV," he says. "Sadly, [that project] is sleeping with the fishes right now. It would be nice if we could resume the project someday, but...."

"Because the game [Versus XIII] itself was incomplete , there really wasn't a whole lot brought over, if I'm speaking honestly," he admits. "It's pretty difficult to compare apples and oranges in this case. You have something that was incomplete and never really fully formed. [Versus] was more an idea that an actual game, whereas what we've created here is a complete, finished product.

This truly sheds light to the possibility of them not having much material from Versus XIII to begin with while carrying over and revising elements from it.

If i had to interperate, i'd say that the overall game being the way it isn't necessarily due to being incomplete (even if the narrative holes may feel that way), but moreso that under time, budget, and actual existing material from Versus XIII, they had to manage with preserving what they had (while connecting dots, trimming, & revising some stuff here and there) in a certain amount of development time period in order to realize FFXV as a real standalone game.

It really all comes down to execution.

Well on paper(scripts, artwork, story) they had a lot of Versus material, but that's not the heavy lifting when it comes to creating games in terms of assets and actual game development, they barely had anything at all like 25% of Versus XIII with assets probably being scrapped.
