At what point does being picky with games hinder your growth or future as a gamer?

When I first got into video games with Mario and Sonic I didn't even know what RPGs were. Once I played FF Legends I liked it but wasn't into it over Sonic (my favorite mascot as a young boy).

But once I played Chrono Cross I was spoiled as a gamer. I decided right then and there that that was the games should be. Deep in story. Beautiful visually. Full of a cast of characters you loved and talk about (or joke about) for years. (to the day I still make running gag jokes about Serge smoking a cigar after sex with Leena LOL)

But after 2010 I found it harder and harder to get the games I like. I want RPGs and Action RPGs. But not Tactics RPGs or First-Person POV RPGs. I know it's picky. And to some it may seem stupid to limit myself. But when I play games, the less like an RPG or an Action RPG it is the less I can full warm up to it.

Example: the second Ar Tonelico game. I like the character Croix (the lead). Like the battle system. But I didn't keep the game. Weapons never changed in looks. Too much sex comedy and S&M refs. 16-bit looks. Few anime cutscene or cutscene at all. Beat game once. Looked back on it with a mix of shame, enjoyment and then traded it to move on.

This problem continues with most games now. Other than certain ones when rarely come out now I can't see to stick with the games. I've even turned to non-RPGs to try and break this gamer's block. I've tried Dead Space (all 3), the Batman Arkham games (all 3), Infamous (all 3), Mass Effect (all 3), Assassin's Creed series (most of them).... But it doesn't seem to matter. The only games I can really go all-out and focus on are FFs, Tales, and KH games. It used to be .hack, Wild ARMs, Xeno games, and Grandia series were on that list too but they've all died off mostly.

I'm not sure what to do. I want to save money so I've sold my old systems and poured all focus into maintaining my PS3 and 4. But rarely do the RPGs I like come on them anymore. When my PS3 break again, do I ditch it too and focus purely on 4. Would that mean giving up on RPGs at the same time if I did that since PS4 was released in an age where turn-based RPGs are dying out?

As far as I've seen, I don't like FPS or Sports games. If it's big on story, and has lots of characters and towns and gear management I'd love it. Anything like Star Ocean, FFs, KH, Grandia, Wild ARMs, or Xeno games I'd be all for. I like Shadow Hearts 2 but hated the 3rd one with a passion. Childish. Same with all the Atelier Iris or other Gust games. I want something that's deep and fun and long in story and not some MOE bull"spit". It's just the kinda guy I am. When I try other stuff I just waste money and end up not liking it.

Ar Tonelico 1 has actual turn based battles and way less innuendo (though it's still present). So maybe you'll like that?

I dunno, PS4 seems like it has a pretty good lineup of JRPGs coming along. We've got Type-0, XV, and KHIII, obviously. Then there's Persona 5 and the new Ys. So that's already 5 games you could probably sink 100 hours into. Not too shabby imo. And I'm guessing it'll get some Tales games at some point too.

Or maybe you could go for Vita? The thing is like JRPG heaven:
- FF I-X (and also X-2)
- Every Persona
- Ys 1-4 and 7 and the new one that's coming out.
- Couple Tales games
- Bunch of other PS1 and PSP games I'm probably forgetting about

@Myrodis19 I tried Suikoden 4 or 5, but was turned off by the silent lead and the heavy army mission way of telling the story. Now that I only had a dying PS2, a dying PS3, and a barely played PS4 I need to focus on recent games. But thanks for the suggestion.

@ScienceNonfiction I intend to get Ys on PS4 and KH3, and almost all that. But that's down the line, maybe 2016 for some of it. I'm wondering if they can get some more JRPGs over to the US within the next 4-5 months. Most games I have reserved but nothing untill November and December.

ASSASSIN'S CREED: UNITY 11/11/14
FINAL FANTASY XV spring 2015?
FINAL FANTASY TYPE-0 2015
PROJECT PHOENIX 2015
TALES OF ZESTERIA 2015?
BATMAN: ARKHAM KNIGHT 2015
SOUL SAGA EP1 2014
KINGDOM HEARTS 2.5 12/2/2014
DRAGON AGE: INQUISITION? 11/18/14
YS PS4
GOD EATER RAGE BURST PS4

I can't go back to Ar Tonelico. I don't wanna feel like I'm play a porno around my friends and siblings. Played Ys 7, Celceta, Oath in Felghana. But now I've had to sell my Vita and PSP and I hope they come out on PS3 cuz I can't get anymore systems. Not even PS Vita TV.

@Wazi the pa I played DMC 2-4, but stopped when they kept going backwards with the story and reinventing their lead character. I am getting KH2.5 HD, it's a must. LOL I'll look up what the story and character progression of Ratchet and Clank and Sly Cooper is like. I've played a lot of KH games, so maybe these will be like that. What do they do to make the playable cast stronger? Shop for guns and armor?
