Like I posted above, Fumito Ueda said he considers ICO to be the "spiritual successor" of SotC, and if I could find an article source I totally would, but I have no idea where I could start looking. >.>
Also, here's some of the promotional videos Sony released on the web (I think they were aired in Japan?) for SotC. I thought they were pretty awesome. xD

Yeah, the FFVII compilation is a good example of games that would actually make more sense playing in order of release. I actually think if I played Crisis Core first, I'd be really confused when I got around to FFVII!

What are your thoughts on ICO, if you don't mind me asking? Before you said SotC was your favorite game of all time (I like this guy!), so...

So appearently the versions of the games on plus for free are from the ICO/SotC collection...so it would make a bunch of sense for them to include SotC before ICO was taken off of the free games list. I'm DLing both now. So slow though.

Actually, I think I'm going to pop in SotC sometime today and play through it again. Haha, all of this talk about my favorite game makes me want to play it.
Also, can I give you a small handful of tips before you begin? I won't be offended of course if you decline. ;)

Go for it. I know i'm not gonna be able to defeat the Colossi on the first few tries so any help would be appreciated.

ICO is also in my Top 5 but for different reasons. It was the best escort mission in a game and I loved the back half of the game. There's some tedium but it's rather on the short side so it doesn't overstay its welcome.

    Sweet~
Note that there are new trophies they added for SotC, and a handful of them have to do with catching lizards and eating all of the fruit in the world:
    http://www.nextlevelgamer.com/team-ico-games/sotc-lizard-fruit-location-guide
Okay, these are just a few tips that will help to grow your stamina circle (considered a "grip" circle that slowly lessens the longer the main character, Wander, holds on to a ledge, vined wall, or colossus fur) and health meter:
    • throughout the world you'll find certain trees bearing clumps of fruit in different colors - orange, pink, and gray/black. Using your arrow, shoot them down and pick them up to consume them. This will increase your health bar a lot, so find as many as you can. From the starting point in the temple and once your take your first steps into the world, the first tree right in your path of finding the first colossus is nestled right above a small outcrop of rocks.
    • note that some fruit is well-hidden and can only be seen by climbing up the trunk of the tree, which works in just the way of climbing anything else in the game. You'll find a flat platform on the top of the tree, and oftentimes if you look around you'll find fruit nestled in the upper branches. However, once you reach the south-eastern most maps, be careful when retrieving fruit, as sometimes they'll land on rock landing below where you literally can't climb out of or escape unless you jump off the side, killing yourself.
    • at every save temple on the map is a lizard with a silver tail that will increase your stamina/grip circle if you can either kill it, or have good enough aim to pin its tail down (the lizard lives, but is missing a tail...ah, well). The lizards you see running around normally at random cliffs, grass, whatever are black lizards and don't offer anything. You can kill the silver-tailed lizards with your bow, sword (slash at them), or even run over them with the horse, Agro. The lizards are pretty jumpy though, so keep a relatively good distance away and try to hit them with an arrow.
    • There are 25 save temples, which if you visit at least a third of them will offer a substantial amount of stamina and put you in a good position for new colossus battles. You can actually visit every single save temple in the game before even encountering your first colossus. The same goes for the fruit trees.
So these are just two tips that I always give to new players so they have a bit of an edge when fighting the colossi for the first time; the controls can be a bit tricky (might want to change the camera or button layout in the main menu, too, if you're not used to the JP controls), and some colossi can be pretty damn ruthless.

One thing I noticed today while booting up SotC (PS2 version for nostalgia factor, or I'd totally stream it) is that this game has really fast loading times considering the huge world.
Also, the draw distance in this game, considering the age and it's on the PS2, is amazing. I can almost see across the entire world map. Started up my new playthrough, just exploring again. Visited *ICO beach* on the west side of the map, a nice easter egg by Team ICO.

I just beat the first colossus. Yeah i'm shocked too. but it was surprisingly easy, and unbelievably fun. I wasn't even looking for it, I thought all those ledges led to something else.

Nope. Your sword's *GPS* light always directs you to the colossi. Glad you got it downloaded, though. I'm actually playing it right now, too. I'm on the third one, though. Also, Agro has a few cool tricks you can pull off, and there's a trophy for figuring out all of the tricks you can pull off on him. Here's a list if you're interested:

May I also confirm that Agro is in fact female.

I finished off the third colossus with a jump stab. Wow. I feel amazing. Somehow I didn't miss and completely fall head-over-heels and go ker-splat on the ground. :D
EDIT: and by the way, if anyone wants to join me (and Tsukiyomi) and play SotC, feel free. Not really an official Let's Play this or that, but if anyone has the game and extra time on their hands, feel free to join in. :)

How did you do a jump stab? Just beat the 2nd one.

    Jump, then R1+square, together.
I love the music on the second one. "Revived Power" I think.
Edit: I forgot to mention that you can also hitch a ride on the birds in SotC. Starting with the easiest to find, the white doves that surround Mono's resting place in Dormin's temple can be latched onto easily by pressing R1 after a jump towards them.
When running around on Agro, you'll enter various invisible "zones" of different hawks flying around the map. As long as Agro is not full-on sprinting but still galloping, with good timing you can make Wander jump and grab onto the hawk, and go for a short ride. You can also climb on top of the save shrines and wait for a hawk to come by. I believe you'll know if a hawk is around the save shine by looking at the ground on the top level of the save shrine. If it has sort of nest-like covering, a hawk will probably come by.
Now this next one is a bit harder to find, and I myself don't know exactly where you need to go to find it, but at some places in the map you can stand and a certain eagle, Loki, will come by, and as long as you have stamina you can hold on to Loki and literally take a trip across the world.

Sounds like a trick I shouldn't be using for my first run.

Probably not. Especially with a lower health bar. Jump stabs deal a lot of damage, but they're very risky to pull off.

Pretty awesome scoring Ico last week and Shadow of the Colossus this week on PlayStation Plus. I played these on PS2 but have been wanting to revisit 'em in HD for a while now.

Well, if you have any time today I'm just kind of playing SotC lazily if you want to play along. Tsukiyomi just started SotC.
Have you played the collection in HD, or just the PS2 originals?

I remember at E3 back in 2011 at the Sony conference when they would still pull back the stage afterwards and have a bunch of demo stations on the floor while a concert was going. Me and Erren went all over the place trying to find the ICO and SotC HD station. It was amazing seeing that version of the game up close for the very first time.

Haha, that sounds so fun. I remember reading the announcement, and I was beside myself with happiness. SotC is just one of those games that I think deserves every second of praise it gets (I know there are plenty of those that don't like it, however) and more. The HD remasters did wonders to already beautiful games. Here's hoping The Last Guardian is eventually released, and is just as good as ICO and SotC.
