Final Fantasy X and the Violent Sacred

I have completed and uploaded my second video for anyone interested in watching. This one will explore the connections between Yu Yevon and the understanding of archaic religion developed by Rene Girard, as well as the connections between the conflict between Tidus and Jecht and Rene Girard's...

Final Fantasy X and the Violent Sacred

Final Fantasy X tends to be seen, for better or for worse, as a game that's generally antagonistic towards religion. I've always felt, however, that this is a bit reductive, even if the game sometimes does take some cheap shots. As such, I've put together a pair of videos that analyze the ways...

Dawn of the (Gnostic) Future - or, Ikkin's video analysis of the FFXV novel

Bumping this to provide a link to my final video -- this one focuses on Noct's different attitude towards "moving forward," but it also considers a linguistic connection between DotF and gnostic writings and concludes with a summary of everything discussed so far. I hope everyone who's stayed...

Dawn of the (Gnostic) Future - or, Ikkin's video analysis of the FFXV novel

Bumping this to provide a link to my third video -- this one focuses on DotF's original character, Solara Antiquum, but it also has a lot to say about Luna in the process.

Dawn of the (Gnostic) Future - or, Ikkin's video analysis of the FFXV novel

Bumping this to provide a link to my second video -- this one focuses on Ardyn's characterization and is relevant to both the game canon and the novel canon. I hope you enjoy it!

Dawn of the (Gnostic) Future - or, Ikkin's video analysis of the FFXV novel

It's been a long time coming, but I've been planning to make a video analysis of DotF since the spoilers first started leaking, and I finally had the opportunity to do so. What I'm currently posting is the first of four planned videos: All four videos have been planned and voice recorded...

Final Fantasy XV - General News Thread

The level of detail is incredible... and I love the architecture!

Final Fantasy XVI - General News Thread

I think this is true to the extent that AA games like Kena and Stray can be ridiculously gorgeous... but having reached that point doesn't mean that all games that are released will achieve graphics that are satisfying enough, and I don't think FFXVI in particular has cleared that bar.

Final Fantasy XVI - General News Thread

This video doesn't back you up on color tone or lighting -- in fact, DF sounds pretty confident that those aspects are artistic rather than technical choices, and they prefer the "more realistic" look in the final game! I do think you have a case about water and reflections, but those aspects...

Final Fantasy XVI - General News Thread

Using a screenshot from Episode Duscae absolutely proves something. ;) Unfortunately, it proves the exact opposite of what it's intended to prove -- namely, that comparing FFXV itself wouldn't conduce to the desired result. (Using Comrades since it has the most comparable trees... but...

Final Fantasy XVI - General News Thread

You can prefer XVI's Titan on a design level, but the XVI asset just seems far, far less impressive. I'll start with XVI's this time, then compare from there: XVI Titan has a lot of jagged edges that scream "low-poly normal mapped UE3 model" to me. The rocks in the upper left quadrant next...

Final Fantasy XVI - General News Thread

There's already a solution to the 30fps "problem" that doesn't require them to cut visual fidelity back a generation, though -- just have 4k30 and 1440p60 (or, if necessary, 1080p60) options with the same graphical bells and whistles, and let players decide what they think is more important.

Final Fantasy XVI - General News Thread

I think FFXVI's biggest visual problem is FFXV, to be honest. Case in point: The primary point of comparison isn't "a really solid late PS4/XONE game." It's a predecessor that pulled off real-time scenes as absurdly over-the-top as the CG Final Fantasy used to be famous for. The difference...

Final Fantasy XVI - General News Thread

Nah, the things PBR improves the most are the most fantastic things - metal and crystal, for instance. Without it, things look plasticky, and plastic is as far from fantasy as you can get.

Final Fantasy XVI - General News Thread

Storytelling and characterization might be pillars of Final Fantasy, but they're not the series' Unique Selling Point (USP). FF's USP -- since at least FFVI, if not earlier -- is immersion in an extraordinary kind of experience that other games can't provide, and crazy graphics has always been...

Final Fantasy XVI - General News Thread

I wish! (In the context of being made by FFXIV staff, it's not so much "brought back" as "continued using," though; XIV itself is on a heavily modified Crystal Tools fork.)

Final Fantasy XVI - General News Thread

I think they said that UE5 was going to come into use in Early 2021. Not that it matters for FFXVI... it's supposedly using Crystal Tools!

Final Fantasy XVI - General News Thread

An interesting implication of this is that it means that FFXVI almost certainly isn't using UE5, which would put it as a late 2021/early 2022 game rather than something further out than that. A game that was able to take advantage of Nanite and Lumen certainly would seem forward-looking and...

    Everything FFXV Datamining Related

KHIII has some pretty crazy setpieces, to be fair... though practically nothing comes close to the scale and complexity of the 2013 target Leviathan setpiece. (R&C Rift Apart probably has the best claim on it, and that's a PS5 game. XD ) FFVIIR is the least ambitious of the three by a fair...

Final Fantasy VII REMAKE - General News Thread

Persona 5 probably isn't the sort of game that's frequently bought used, no... but the Persona fandom is highly evangelistic, and having an old copy of the original version lying around that you no longer need is a pretty strong motivation to let one's friends use the extra copy. =P It makes...
