In tonight's Dissidia Final Fantasy press conference some massive news have emerged.

Dissidia Final Fantasy is being developed on a custom-built PlayStation 4, with the arcade joysticks even featuring PlayStation buttons.

Square Enix has confirmed Dissidia Final Fantasy will remain exclusive to arcade systems for at least one year.

Koei Tecmo's Team Ninja is working with Business Division 4 to develop the game.

As expected, Ichiro Hazama is serving as producer as he did for Dissidia 012 on PSP.

Good news, bad news. Think the decision to not go with the arcade-familiar, big-button stick layout is a mistake, to be honest. I see nothing in the controls that seems like it'd require PS layouts, and I think they'd be better off fully telegraphing what type of game they are and conforming to the standard (SF/Tekken/P4A) button layout.

I also say this as I'd love to see a proper competitive scene spring up around Dissidia, but... the fact that you need two screens for multiplayer and that it's now 3vs3 both sort of scupper that already. The 3v3 thing really perplexes me - Dissidia worked great as a 1-on-1 game and I can't really see why they've upped the player count other than to sell 3 (or 6) cabinets at once for 3x the money. (And lo, this conference confirmed arcades will be expected to commit to three units minimum).

So, mixed bag and all that. Excited for more Dissidia though.

They also said they're aiming to have a roster of at least 50 characters eventually by updating the game over the network. Plus additional costumes.

You think it's worth playing 012 on PS TV?

A competitive scene is definitely possible, though not in the traditional fighting game sense you're probably thinking of. What gamers will be looking for down the line will be whether the game offers any meaningful mechanics or elements that would support smart play and teamwork. There's also the matter of balance which, while more challenging for 3 vs 3, is still doable. I believe that Square Enix might have to introduce a ban system like League of Legends if this game ever builds a competitive scene, as some team combinations might turn out to be overpowered.

Takeo Kujiraoka is the director, he's been a battle planner/designer for the Dissidia games on PSP and the XIII trilogy.

Where is 012's director, Mitsunori Takahashi?

Awesome news, maybe I will finally play a DISSIDIA game now that it will be on the main consoles. 50 characters, that's crazy! FFT character was announced, it's nice to see DISSIDIA actually being what it was set out to be, a compilation of all these FF characters fighting in one universe. It's nice to see characters from games like the Tactics series get to shine. I'm looking forward to seeing what characters are introduced.

Not a huge surprise since Tactics was largely present in Curtain Call.
