There's a scan from JUMP over here: http://www.novacrystallis.com/2014/06/final-fantasy-explorers-announced-for-3ds/ (edit: changed to write-up from Nova Crystallis)

It looks like a monster hunting game focused on the iconic Final Fantasy summon monsters, complete with class-based multiplayer gameplay. Not a lot is known right now and everyone is just going by the limited text and screenshots shown in the scan.

The artwork looks pleasing, looks like a mix somewhere between the work of Akihiko Yoshida (Bravely Default, Final Fantasy Tactics) and Toshiyuki Itahana (Crystal Chronicles). (Edit: Toshiyuki Itahana confirmed!)

From Squirrel Emperor below:
Director: Atsushi Hashimoto (Lead Planner on SaGa 2 DS, planner on Kid Icarus Uprising)
Logo/Key Art Design: Yoshitaka Amano
Character Supervisor: Toshiyuki Itahana
Design Supervisor: Gen Kobayashi
Composer: Tsuyoshi Sekito
Project Manager: Takahiro Abe
Producer: Hiroyuki Miura

I haven't bothered with Monster Hunter games because I know they require so much time, but I did play and enjoy Toukiden on Vita.

I'd certainly look into this as it's FF.

(Slightly unrelated: I don't know how so many sites are getting away with posting scans of this, when Square Europe told us to take it down from our own site. How they get away with posting scans every week is beyond me, after I've since learnt it's supposedly illegal.)

I'm hoping what this means is that we'll be getting more big 3DS games from Square Enix.

Heh. FF-Reunion posts scans all the time and SEJ doesn't do anything about it. Also, those scans usually first emerge from Japanese sites like 2ch or twitter. I've also never had a issue posting scans when I used to report FF news too but this was in North America and not Europe.

Final Fantasy Explorers Will Connect Players Locally And Through Wi-Fi
Last week, Square Enix announced Final Fantasy Explorers, an upcoming multiplayer action game for the Nintendo 3DS, with familiar job classes from the Final Fantasy series. Game Watch recently shared some details on the game’s multiplayer connectivity options.

According to the Game Watch report, Final Fantasy Explorers will have a multiplayer mode with ad-hoc (local wireless) and Wi-Fi options for teams of four to get together and party. For those of you who prefer to play solo, that won’t be a problem, either.
Final Fantasy Explorers will have players take on various quests while working together with their allies. The game also features popular summons, monsters, and job classes that have appeared in past Final Fantasy titles.

So far, we’ve only been introduced to four jobs in Knight, Monk, Black Mage, and White Mage, but we’ll likely be hearing about more in the near future, along with further gameplay details.

Final Fantasy Explorers is in development for Nintendo 3DS.

Details On Final Fantasy Explorers’ First Four Jobs
Square Enix recently announced Final Fantasy Explorers, an upcoming multiplayer action game, and the first hunting-style game from the Final Fantasy series. The game’s official website shares some details on the jobs that have been announced thus far.

Knight: Knights are well-balanced in offense and defense. In addition to their offensive prowess, they specialize in defensive abilities that can be used for guarding.

Monk: Similar to the roles they’ve had in past Final Fantasy games, Monks are all about physical attacks. They have low defense but make up for it with high vitality and the ability to rush down enemies with waves of attacks.

Black Mage: Black Mages are experts at offensive magic. Using their high-powered magic attacks, they can attack enemies from a long range. If they’re anything like the Black Mages we’ve come to know, they will likely be the “glass cannon” types that can pack quite the punch.

White Mage: And finally, the White Mage job that saves lives with heals and power up allies with supportive abilities. You’ll probably want one of these around to stay alive against tough foes.

Famitsu Details

  • Supports local and internet multiplayer
  • About 20 jobs. Besides the already shown knight, white mage, monk, and black mage, there's also dragoon, paladin, thief, ninja, red mage, time mage, bard, and freelancer.
  • You can assign up to 8 abilities to various buttons in combat.
  • Even though it looks like Monster Hunter, it feels more like FF11/FF14-lite. Positioning and orientation is important, and there's an ability synergy system.
  • There's a combat log that shows damage numbers and such.
  • You can swap around weapons and armor, but you can also swap around abilities too. You can learn abilities on one job and use them on others.
  • However, the cost of abilities is different if used on a job they don't come from. For example, the cost of black magic is halved on black mage compared to other jobs.
  • Set on an island with many areas that you can freely explore
  • It'll be possible to recruit monsters you defeat. You can create a party of two players and two monsters (not sure if this is the only setup, but it's what's given)
  • There's lots to do after the main story is completed. They're talking 100~200 hours of play.
  • They're developing the game to give the spirit of FF in a multiplayer RPG.

So, Dragon Knight is dragoon, I suppose? Also
  • You can swap around weapons and armor, but you can also swap around abilities too. You can learn abilities on one job and use them on others.
  • However, the cost of abilities is different if used on a job they don't come from. For example, the cost of black magic is halved on black mage compared to other jobs.
4 heroes of light like? Or Bravely Default, I suppose, though I have yet to play it. Fully expect to play this game as a useless Red Mage, trading power for style.

In Final Fantasy Explorers’ World, Monsters Protect Crystals From Mankind
In an earlier report, we got a look at the first screenshots along with a Q&A by Square Enix for Final Fantasy Explorers. The game’s official website also shares more about the game’s world and the importance of Crystals.

About the World of Final Fantasy Explorers:

Final Fantasy Explorers takes place on a new island called “Amostela” that was created after a sudden crustal movement in the planet.

Amostela contains an enormous amount of Crystals, which resulted in countless “Explorers” appearing on the island to collect them all as part of their occupation. However, there are Summons that wish to preserve Crystals in order to protect the world of nature, by standing up against these Explorers.

In the midst of all the events, a young Explorer steps into Amostela.

What are Crystals?

Crystals are the source of the planet’s energy, which flows inside the mysterious ores. All life on the planet shared the benefit of evolution thanks to these Crystals, but mankind has begun harvesting them for the further development of their own civilization.

Places of Interest:

The above is a look at the home town and base of operations, called Libertus. This is where the Explorers take on requests that take them across all the different parts of the island.

The hometown also has an airship that’s used to travel to different areas, and various stores. There’s a Crystal in the middle of the town, which seems to serve some kind of purpose, but what it is remains unknown.

The Regi Plains is one of the earlier areas of the game. There’s a giant Crystal that can be seen in the background called the Grand Crystal, which is considered to be the origin of the planet. The energy from this crystal helped mankind’s expansion and development.

Another area is the Hibato Volcanoes, which is a scorching area that flows with magma. This also happens to be Ifrit’s area of domain, alongside the Bomb monsters seen in many other Final Fantasy titles.

Someone really likes bloom in their screenshots.

I'm optimistic (for once)! I think this can go down really well, and the colourful art style, along with the player avatar designs that are cute enough without wandering into the complete far end of the spectrum with ultra-chibiness, makes this look very whimsical in character.

Time to plan out how I'm going to go invite/persuade/coerce a few people into getting this.
