Some UK chart updates: FF15 has dropped from 2nd for its first week to 4th for its second week with a 75% drop in sales in the UK.

In terms of drop this is actually marginally better than FF13 (FF13 dropped 80% for week 2) though of course we should remember FF15 sold 30% less than FF13 on Week 1.

Anyway - it's a decent hold, better than FF13, so that's good. Let's hope next week maintains.

Do we know how much that translates to copies sold?

Japan Update! FF15 just manages to scrape into the top 5 this week.

01./00. [PS4] Yakuza 6: The Song of Life # <ADV> (Sega) {2016.12.08} (¥8.190) - 218.168 / NEW
02./02. [3DS] Pokemon Sun / Moon <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) {2016.11.18} (¥4.980) - 190.101 / 2.379.446 (-15%)
03./03. [3DS] Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS <ACT> (Nintendo) {2016.12.01} (¥4.700) - 117.908 / 280.088 (-27%)
04./00. [PS4] The Last Guardian <ADV> (Sony Interactive Entertainment) {2016.12.06} (¥6.900) - 82.260 / NEW
05./01. [PS4] Final Fantasy XV # <RPG> (Square Enix) {2016.11.29} (¥8.800) - 79.792 / 770.263 (-88%)

The 88% drop sounds severe, but this is actually in line with the rest of the series: FF12 and FF13's week-two drop was 88% also. At its best, the series' saw drops of 84% and 83% for FF7 and FF9 respectively. FF is always front-loaded in Japan. So - that's good. The legs are as predicted, not better, not worse.

The downside of that, of course, is that FF15 sold less than half what FF13 did week one in Japan. It's becoming clear now that the tail is no different and so they're going to struggle to sell through the initial shipment without hefty discounting. But the situation is maintaining, not worsening, which is good. It's safe to say this game has not done what would've been desired in Japan, however.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't analyst expectations along the lines of 6-8M sold over its lifetime, or am I tired from my flight from The Land Of Make Shit Up?

The general expectation was that it'd do 6-7m, I feel. 8m if they were lucky. FF13 did about 6.5 and then crossed 7 when it got its PC port later on. The low bar is about 5.8m, which is around the number that FF9 and FF12 sold. If it struggles to sell more than that it will be considered a bit of a failure internally.

It's worrying that it might struggle to cross 1m in Japan now without hardcore price slashing, but hopefully those shortcomings can be made up in the West. But when FF13 hit 6.5m, for instance, nearly 2m of that was in Japan.

FF13 feels like an eternity ago. The number of PS4s sold in Japan is roughly the number of PS3s in 2009, but the list of best-selling games is no way comparable. This begs the question - what the hell are Japanese PS4 owners playing? Are their PS4s collecting dust while they play mobile games?
By the looks of it, yes.

seems like FFXV got a nice hold in japan, based on the last media create data.
It's better than last week; -44%, 44k sales. It's now at 814k lifetime. It's never going to catch FF13 though; it's going to finish more than 50% down, it seems, which is a shame. But it's holding better than I thought.

Here are the week 3 drops for the FF13 series:
FF13 // -41% (1.8million total as of that week)
FF13-2 // -48% (704k total as of that week)
LR // -64% (358k total as of that week)
FF15 // -44% (814k total that week)

While XV struggling to reach/surpass XIII numbers is dissapointing, how is faring the game on XB1 in Japan? Cause all the numbers I can find are all based on PS4 units.

"In Japan, according to Tabata-san, there is still a strong belief in the “I bought this game and now it’s over” concept. However, western open world games, for instance Grand Theft Auto V and The Witcher III, are kept active as long as players are satisfied, and there are many updates even after release.

In Japan there is internet in every home, Tabata-san continues, and everyone has a smartphone, but 20% of console users still don’t connect it to the web. To those people he wants to convey the idea that if you connect your console to the internet you can enjoy it more. The initial sale is not the end, and enjoyment of the game will steadily grow with time."

I think this might be a good sign.
Final Fantasy XV: Hajime Tabata Comments on Sales; Talks About Worldwide Release and Open World

Sooo, Square-Enix sales projection were satisfied?
5 million is basically the marker for "Okay," so that's what we'll be looking for by March when we get investor reports.

These comments from Tabata are positive, but I also wouldn't put too much stock into any comments made to media before the next investor briefing, as they're not legally allowed to really comment too much one way or another until they've briefed investors. Promising, though - hopefully pans out to similar positives with investors.

it seems FFXV sold 803,077 copies in the first week (based on the infamous vgchartz); not counting digital.

for comparison, FFXIII sold more than 1 million in it's first month, so i guess FFXV numbers are alright.
