My favorite is modern fantasy - so FFVII, VIII and now XV. I'm really tired of the sci-fi settings like FFXIII, although the mix of medieval and sci-fi in FF12 wasn't bad.
Exactly my point. Even though I personally did not love XII that much and still I cannot understand why, (maybe the battle system), it's vast places combined with NPCs living in an old fashioned way and the ability to march through this medieval world with some sci-fi settings was truly astonishing.

Personally the XIII world wasn't that tiring except some places in the game, but I really enjoyed Gran Pulse the most, especially the Sulyya Springs and Oerba. So even then, I prefer watching less technology. I believe LR will win me too regarding this matter. Wild Lands and Luxerion are the places that attract me the most so far for the above reasons.

And I can't wait for a modern fantasy world like XV, where technology has progressed but there are some medieval elements here and there to keep the balance.

Well when she is the only thing SE has been promoting for the past 7 years really, it's understandable. Even the Compilation of FFVII didn't stretch on this long if you consider the the main period for that from 2004 through 2007 (Before Crisis, Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, Advent Children).
You really can't stand her anymore huh? Tell that to Japanese fans! Well to be honest I love Lightning, I am a huge fan. BUT it's a fact that I started liking her while playing the game (so around 3,5 years), plus XIII-2 was not that much about Lightning at all so I'm not that tired of her. However I completely understand your point! And I agree with you in a way. I prefer fresh things than recycled ones. And I really hope they won't stretch XV related stuff too much. One or two installments is enouph.

I do miss the industrial modern sci-fi of FFVII, and the modern-futuristic world of FFVIII. I'd love to have a return to that.

I think it depends on the game for me, with regards to medieval settings. Normally, it doesn't always appeal to me, but I did love the world of FFIX and enjoyed XII, as well. Even the brief time I spent in XIV was lovely. I think it would be the right time for medieval to return in FFXVI, though I really liked the look of the modern-sci-fi in the Agni's Philosophy demo, so that style would suit me for XVI. Agni's looked a bit more along the lines of FFVII and VIII.

VIII was my first Final Fantasy game and my favourite, so I guess I'll always like the modern environments more. However, I do still like the games with lower-tech worlds, like FFI.

Considering that both XI and XIV are set in fairly medieval-ish worlds, do you think we'll ever see a Final Fantasy MMO that has a more modern setting?

Hmm... I don't think we are gonna see soon any new MMO FF, and to be honest I believe a sci-fi MMO is probably not gonna happen either. Final Fantasy is all about jobs in such games and it would be bit disconcerting to limit them in a sci-fi world, because it would be natural to not add some jobs that definitely don't fit! Imagine a black mage in modern clothes...!

I like pretty much any setting if it's done right. That said, I tend to prefer the FF games that have a more sci-fi/steampunk feel to them. For one reason or another they aren't my favorite titles, but the worlds they create, at the very least, seem cool and interesting.

Both really have their appeals. I love the fairy tale world of FF IX with all its kingdoms, castles, mage, princess, knights and whatnot. the game would not be so fun, charming and magical without it.

On the other hand its Tetsuya Nomuras FF style which I have come to love the most and which to me really embodies what Final Fantasy means to me, the feeling it gives me. If I hear Final Fantasy, the first design that comes to mind is Nomuras typical, modern, more realistic design. Even while at times that also incorporates not a medieval but a feudal or ancient feeling (such as in FF X), its very different from the fairy tale, fantasy-heavy design of the SNES FFs or IX.

But the thing is that Nomuras design could never work on the early FFs or FF IX and their design could never work on the modern FF games. each of them has its charm and is as magical as they are because they have the right design. So ultimately there is no better or worse. each game has the design thats best for it. I love Nomura the most but his kind of characterdesign would really not work for FF IX. So I cant say that I would want one particular design style for all FFs. It depends on the game itself and what it wants to convey. After all versatility is one of the biggest trademarks of the series.

But if we talk about new FF games, then I´ll always hope it has the modern, more realistic Nomura-esque design. Thats my preference. But I still love FF IX to death even though it has a completely different kind of design.

Oh and with "Nomuras design" I am referring to the kind of design the FFs have he worked on. I am aware of course that often he is mostly character designer and not so much the environment designer but you get what I mean. he just kind of symbolizes a certain design in the series for me.

It doesn't matter to me as long as it's done right. But FFXIV's medieval setting is what I like and hopefully one day we'll see a Final Fantasy game, that isn't an MMO, just like it (fully aware FFXIV can be played solo) . I like modern and steam punk too.

Thanks :) I just love the women in Final Fantasy, I could look at them all day , so I thought "hey why not make a sig with them?" Plus it sums up my love for the series as a whole with each of the women representing one of the games that I love so much. I probably would have included women from FF I - VI as well but there wasnt any room in the sig for them anymore and while I appreciate the games for their importance and nostalgic value, the Nintendo-era FFs dont captivate me as much as the Sony-era FFs. Thats because when it comes to FF, one of the reasons I became such a huge fan in 1999 was that it felt like playing a movie. Because of the emotions and the cinematic style of it that really made you feel like you´re in a movie. But that kind of cinematic storytelling really started with FF VII, while the FFs I - VI didnt really have that yet and were far more traditional RPGs. So even though I dont dislike any of them and I like IV and I think VI is really fantastic (SE should definitely do a remake for this one, even if its just a remake with PS2 graphics), VII - XIII (and I am pretty sure that will go for XV as well one I played it) are the FFs that I really love passionately. So thats why I chose the female protagonists from those games for my sig.

Everything messy, steampunk-y, somewhat medieval like Ivalice. VI's setting was great too! The wintry mining town of Narshe and birthday suit town Zozo. It would have probably been great to see those towns re-illustrated by Isamu Kamikokuryo.

Kinda didn't like VIII and XIII's setting although everything XIII was beautifully rendered I think I could let it pass.

I like both, I love Medieval type of fantasy and Sci Fi Fantasy at the same time. However, I feel very connected to VII and VIII. I'm really excited to see Final Fantasy XV, mixing Sci Fi and Medieval at the same time.

I love medieval era FF like FFIX and FFXII. I don't mind sci-fi FF but I prefer Monster to be organic not robot/mech type like FFXIII, probably the only thing I hate about FFXIII and the most uncommon things people hate about that game.

I totally agree! Same thing with summons. When I saw the first published Eidolons on the web (Ifrit, Siren) I was so thrilled! Then I saw Shiva transforming into a bike... Ok, to be honest I didn't like it at all back then! On March I played the game and I liked most of them including Shiva, Odin, Bahamut as they were fitting to the world. However I still prefer organic monsters and summons and I'm glad they are organic in XV.

What would Final Fantasy VI's world be considered? I mean it had castles and towns, but it also had robots and robot castles. That kind of style I really enjoyed, as well as Final Fantasy XII's. While I did enjoy Final Fantasy XIII it was a bit too futuristic to me.

Honestly, I do prefer the high tech Final Fantasies. Mainly XIII. However, I guess I liked what they did with XIII in general (Gran Pulse, before XIII-2 honestly wasn't all that high tech since it had been basically abandoned.) Although the idea of mythology and gods and l'Cie or whatever you'd group all those things as (how gods operate and such I suppose?) also appealed to me. The Cosmology of it I suppose. Don't ever have me talk about the setting of XIII I will never shut up.

XV has a similar enough setting, it seems that I'm really excited for it. Ivalice too is one of my other favorites, despite being somewhat medieval. (I've never understood the logic of no TV's and stuff but yet they manage to have high tech airships that can be fairly large). I really love the settings though, it's really pretty and some things are very creepy too. It's expansive, with a very expansive mythology. It just makes me so happy.

Strange because Sci-fi has never been something that's appealed to me. (Then again, in terms of what types of settings I like is not something I've ever thought about.) I think definitely being able to explore and view things as you want to in game definitely has an effect on whether I like a game settings as much as XII and XIII. (Then again, FFTA was the first FF I've ever played and I spent approximately half of my childhood on that game. I thought the setting from that game was really pretty too, so I don't even know man.)

With the rest of the FFs, I'm not too fond of the settings. They're definitely fine, but so far nothing's stuck out to me.
