Return to mainland after 'Onward to the disc'?

Hi guys

I have reached the quest 'onward to the disc' and been advised I cannot return.

I just want to ask am I not able to return to the mainland at all? As there's some side quests I want to complete that are like level 50 plus and I'm only level 26.

Or would you advise i do as much training as I can in the mainland before proceeding to the disc?

You can return after you finish the mission. The game always lets you return after a while and there's nothing (or hardly anything) missable on the first continent. There is missable stuff/areas you can never go back to on the other continents though.
