Being out of touch with fans extends to many things really.

SE deciding traditional JRPGs were dead in the West and needing Nintendo to bring Bravely over, only to find it flew off shelves.
Trashing the FFX canon with horrible fanfics.
Shunning Vita owners who campaigned for Type-0.
FF13 sequels.
Story DLC in FF13-2.
The numerous stage events SE is now infamously known for, as mentioned above, repeating Agni, etc.

I'm sure others could chip in with plenty more. SE is one of the most out of touch companies there is when it comes to its fanbase, and I'm rather surprised people would think they aren't.

They have done well in certain areas recently. FF14 ARR has been fantastic. But they continue to be utter bastards, as proven today.

I still don't agree with people's sentiments here.

Hashimoto was promotions producer of VII, this is PlayStation's 20th Anniversary. Square and Sony have had a LONG relationship with each other, of course Square Enix is going to show up in some way. Final Fantasy VII is the biggest title Square has had with Sony, and they know that fans want a remake. However, knowing that they can't really do something like that right now, a PC port with upscaled resolution with PlayStation Trophy support plus additional features makes this a nice announcement for the 20th Anniversary.

As I previously said, the reason people took this the wrong way, is how it was presented. The "build up" is because Hashimoto was trying to speak English and took way too long to deliver this news. He tried his best to connect with the audience of English speaking PlayStation and Square Enix fans which ultimately meant building up hype around this PC port release on PS4.

I really don't feel like this reaction would have happened if he was speaking Japanese at a Japanese event. Personally, I like that this was announced, and I plan on buying it. I hope that they release Final Fantasy XII on PS4 in the future, as it deserves it in my opinion.

While I can't comment on Bravely, I can say that FFX canon with fanfics has nothing to do with being out of touch with fans, you should probably talk with the writers of those novels, as it's THEIR direction with how to take those novels, and doesn't at all affect your gameplay experience.

Vita owners were not shunned simply because Type-0 isn't coming to the Vita. If they put it on just the Vita, they wouldn't get as big of a reach as they could with consoles, and putting it on both means having to create a Vita port as well, which increases production time when they should really be focusing on other titles. You can still use the Remote Play functionality on your Vita if you like, but I understand it isn't the same experience.

Final Fantasy XIII Sequels I cannot deny were against many people's wishes, there are still people that enjoyed those games however (I'm not sure why) and I don't know it's impact in Japan, or what Wada was thinking at the time.

As for showing Agni again instead of Final Fantasy XV, I think we already know why they didn't show XV, and they used Agni simply to show what the future of SE would look like on PS4.

Understand what you're saying, but can only really echo Fleur's views on how this should have went down. Should have been multiple FF announcements and better presented. Was SE's responsibility to ensure this was delivered properly and had to have known how this was going to pan out doing it like this.

FFX might be a more minor thing on the whole, but does destroy fans' experiences and memories of the series they played. Still have a responsibility to keep fans happy, and those fics have killed the games' canon. More minor than other points perhaps, but still a point I feel strongly about. Fine to disagree.

Still believe Type-0 Vita version would have been fair alongside PS4/XBO. Understand the reasons for not doing it, but still feels like a huge shun, especially bringing it to XBO over Vita.

Not going to go into more on Agni and their stage shows in the past. They handle their showings very poorly.

My point is that I believe he was trying to make it a brief announcement, but because he was trying to speak English, it made the whole thing seem like a big reveal was going to be made.

I have to say, I still respect what you're saying, and do agree with you on many aspects.

It was pretty much the worst place and timing they could've made this announcement. I don't know what they were thinking when they decided to do this. A stage in front of many die hard fans? You're of course rising people's expectations if you phrase your first sentences like that!

It was a pretty bad move from Square Enix but people should really start to calm down. It's really not that big of a deal.

Yeap you are right, at most it was a poorly done marketing, which has nothing to do with anything else.

This would have been much better if they had just shown Final Fantasy XV or Type-0. Or better yet, nothing at all.

If they receive any backlash from this stunt they probably deserve it.

Eh, it's still a good announcement... I'm glad they're doing it, and they were definitely not showing either of those games here.

Yea it is a good announcement. But it really didn't deserve this type of announcement, it was poorly planned. I would like to think they didn't intentionally do this to troll their fanbase but I don't know..

I think we can all agree that while we don't begrudge SE for making a FFVII port announcement as opposed to a remake (which none of us should have been expecting, realistically speaking), it's HOW they pulled off today's announcement that deserves the furious backlash.

We don't really know what their actual intentions were, or how aware they were of the troll-ish characteristic of such an announcement, but it was undoubtedly a horrible (and hilarious, let's be honest) idea that will do nothing to galvanise the company's reputation among fans and casual observers. But as Squirrel has said, SE is no stranger to showing up at keynote events just for the sake of doing so, even if they've nowt to show, as they're a big name. They can't feel left out, even if what they actually have to show is...yeeeeeah.

I don't agree.

I do agree with the final sentiment about Square showing up at events for no reason though, I've been annoyed in the past for them doing things like that.

Agreed, A remake was the farthest thing on my mind. I thought first it was the new "Console RPG" or then it could be Final Fantasy XV footage. But they do this. They showed a glimpse of the audience and everyone was pretty hyped. After the announcement I didn't even care, but now it's starting to sink in....

I do remember the Agni showing at the PlayStation Event in February now, and I was actually pissed off then. But, at least they ANNOUNCED something at this event, that time they showed the same fucking thing they showed before...

They actually did announce something at the February event. The announcement was that a new Final Fantasy game for PS4 would be revealed at E313!
Kinda like this Final Fantasy VII game for PS4 we're all getting!
No, those aren't the same at all. An announcement and an actual release aren't the same.
