This is why people's expectations of any Square-Enix announcement via initial teasers should be so low that they burrow into the core of the earth.

Still, let's be fair on the game creators. It looks cute. Just unfortunate that this is free-to-play, which more or less means progress can be inhibited and drastically slowed in favour of taking out your wallet.

Based on the teaser images, who on earth expected a big budget game, anyway?

I expected a game I could buy on the PS Store.

I guess, I should know not to get excited for any Square Enix teasers for now. Had me fooled when I heard it was a PS4 title, but like I did say I hoped it wasn't a free 2 play, cheap digital game (Not to insult the creator so I should say Low budget?). I was right.

They won't be making any new innovating Japanese IP for consoles, neither will they be reviving their old IP's.

SaGa fan's better start feeling blessed they got that Vita game, but it'll probably end up like The 3rd Birthday...

But you don't need a consistent wave of unexciting teasers to tell you that though.

The warning signs were there since last generation of what type of games we would be seeing from that point on.

This is where we're currently at with Square Enix. Here's a chart showing you what their Japanese and western studios will be working on.



As you can see, they've reduced the number of "Major titles Several billion yen." These will most likely be your mainline titles from Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts. Reviving older IPs is not worth the risk and investment. A new IP is a risk as well.

Your "Mid-sized titles 1 billion yen" I'm guessing are going be handheld stuff like Final Fantasy Explorers, new IP's like Bravely Default, reviving old IPs like SaGa and spin-offs like Dragon Quest. Episodic games like "Life is Strange" probably fall under this as well.

"Numerous Small-size titles Several hundred million yen" will probably be mobile titles and smaller downloadable only type of stuff.

But this illustrates what Japanese and and western studios will be working on for the foreseeable future, or until Matusda fucks up and has to leave.

Anyway, nobody should really expect a revival of older Square Enix titles with a big AAA budget. Revival of older IPs will fall under mid and small sized titles.

A game doesn't need a big budget to be good, though. I think mid-budget games are where it's at: fully-featured, standalone titles that are able to experiment and still be finished in a timely manner. If it ends up creatively bankrupt in spite of that, that's a totally different (worse) problem...

The higher the budget, the more anxiety over needing to make a game that appeals to the masses and it takes so many years to finish that it becomes a necessity to make shovelware to stay afloat...

Anyway, I didn't want this announcement but I expected it, so I got a good laugh out of it.
