Time for ATR Details!

So, the entire ATR can be seen here
Individual video links will be added when available.

First, I'm going to go over individual UI elements seen in the progress report clips.

Tabata confirmed that the control scheme did change from Duscae, you will start off with just the main face buttons and more buttons/abilities will become unlocked as you play.

シフトブレイク Warp-strike (lit. Shift-Break)
Guard
Assault
Jump

As I've mentioned previously,
and
are swapped in Japanese games from how other regions usually map their buttons, so you can imagine that Jump and Guard will be swapped for your version of the game if that helps you in any way.

Here we can see two buttons being shown towards the bottom of one of the battle clips shown.

仲間リンク Buddy Link
バトルメニュー Battle Menu

The Buddy Link system seems to be the one seen in these images (time to take up a fuck ton of room)

It's possible though that they aren't the same, the UI is different from these builds and so it's hard to tell which is which. I honestly don't even know which UI is the more recent one... but I'm fairly confident it's the one shown in this first section in the progress report, as the menu for the Buddy Link just looks to be slapped on.

As he's fighting the... giant deer? This comes up on screen briefly, keep in mind this is the demonstration for the enemy counter attacks where the enemies can counter your moves.

This is the
button and it reads スラッシュ Slash
Only moments after we see this just below the Warp-strike window

+
ファントムソード発動 Armiger (lit. Phantom Sword Invocation)

This seems to be the same like it was in Duscae having what is likely Phantom Sword being the same buttons.

A few clips later we see a... Chocobo kicking a magitek soldier in the dick.

It says HOLD
シフト Shoot
We can't see what weapon Noctis has here, but it might be he has a gun? All I know is, that Chocobo is a bad ass.

Next up we see an image of Noctis and a Garula about to attack him and this pops up

The circle swirls around and the
prompt is shown in the middle, milliseconds after we see the
button (captured here) overlay with this showing バリィ Parry.

Two things to notice here, the first being that Noctis has a shield out when he's doing this, the second is that the controls are NOT the same as the rest we've seen so far.
in this case is actually the Guard button and the Parry button which is also Assault (shown outside of this screenshot) is
.

This goes back to what I said in a previous post where holding down the Guard button and pressing Assault when you use
for Guard and
for Assault doesn't make for a comfortable control scheme. However, the UI here is very pretty and looks more up to date alongside the other features we've seen in this demonstration.

Could this be an example of the different game mode type? Is this just an earlier build before the button changes? Honestly, we don't have the answers to this, but it's very interesting to see that even in this example they aren't showing the
+
combination for Parry attacks, supporting my theory.

As for what happens in this screen shot? Well, he guards against the attack and does a Parry Chain as listed on the side and Prompto warps to him with this showing up underneath them.

バリィリンク:盾:プロンプト000(?) Parry Link : Shield : Prompto 000(?)
I'm not sure what the "000" thing is at the end, it could be zeroes, but it might be something else entirely, if you have any idea please let me know.

So this seems to be more co-op stuff akin to what we saw in Duscae but with more flare and with more features, seems like it should be pretty neat. Again, still not sure what the whole button situation is for this, but I guess it doesn't really matter.

A few final minor details from this section of the video. This can be seen at the very start cut off, I can only make out the tail end.

ソード召喚 [...] Sword Summon

I believe that's a at the very start, so I believe this is actually saying ファントムソード召喚 Phantom Sword Summon. This is mapped to
though and not with
+
like with Armiger which also uses "Invoker" and not "Summon". However, you will notice that in the next post there is UI which has the
and
on opposite sides of the window panel, so perhaps that's all this is, and it's a rename of Armiger's ability? Seems a bit strange either way.

Finally, the image of a mini map with the terrain shown as well as the current time of day/sky color shown in the top right (cut off of course).

To be continued...!

...And we're back!

Now that we got that video out of the way, it's time to focus on the gameplay video, which you can watch in full quality and in isolation, here.
Luckily for me, all of the UI here is in English...

First we see the image for Cover

This is adopting the new control scheme with Guard being on
.

Moments later we see this along with Cover shown while Noctis is hovering over a possible warp point.

HOLD
used for warping; the same button used for Warp-strike of course.

As Noctis skulks about the fortress he comes upon his first victim and this appears as he's sneaking up behind him.

In this instance Warp-kill is assigned to
, which in this case is the Assault button. It seems that when you are in Cover you will be able to stealthily take out enemies like this.

This bar is quite interesting.

This bar shown above the weapon switching fills each time Noctis attacks someone and performs some other mechanics like successfully dodging attacks.

This bar will deplete when Noctis warps in battle using a Warp-strike move, it does not drain when he uses a Warp-kill however. I believe what this means is that this bar will now act as the resource for your long range warp abilities in combat instead of draining into your MP like it did in Duscae. This reserves all of your MP for abilities, this does also include the fighting style used in the video. All of those blue particle effects and fancy maneuvering are in fact using small amounts of Noct's MP to use, but I believe his weapons have some MP absorb trait like in Duscae which makes the MP restore quite quickly. I imagine this is something that wouldn't be so easily utilized in battle normally, and that Noctis is quite powerful for the purposes of this video.

What's interesting though is that this is seen not as a warp ability, but of a weapon ability, or perhaps the ring magic? What separates the Warp-strike from this other form of warping exactly? This is more of a gameplay/lore speculation than anything and should honestly result in better gameplay overall.

I also noticed the Armiger flash twice in this video very very briefly.

It's shown above this Warp bar and might be connected to it, but I can't really say for sure. The interesting thing I noticed when trying to find the frames where this UI showed up was that the first time nothing really obvious happened, the second time Noctis did a dodge roll, but nothing showed up on the Guard section at all to show Noctis was pressing
at all.

Noctis also uses dodge roll later on and it doesn't show the Armiger prompt either, but his warp bar wasn't fully charged. There might be some connection with the button used to dodge roll and Armiger, perhaps even just being either
or
, who can say.

It was never used and so honestly I can't say how it will be executed. Also, keep in mind, there is no UI on this video that says anything about the Buddy Link or the Battle Menu from earlier, so it's really tough to say at this point.

One thing I noticed that I can't really show here in a screen shot is just how quickly you can switch your weapons and actually have them actually come out, it looks very responsive and satisfying!

Just after one of these moments I notice this.

Ignis comes on by and this prompt comes up to engage in a tandem attack and we get X-Strike.

Everything happens without annoying delays and pause in combat, which looks really smooth and rewarding to do.

After that we get a glimpse of the new style of tandem attacks which feels a lot like the FFXV E3 trailer back in 2013 in many ways. First I will explain the bar it's connected with. I showed this earlier when I compared it to the Buddy Link, and you can see it again here.

It begins to fill up as soon as Noctis is seen and enters battle, I'm not sure what the parameters are for this bar. When it reaches max it also displays it in text.

I believe that the bar's rate of filling up is much like the other resources (HP and MP) where they are regenerated at a higher rate so that they don't have trouble when recording footage and normally it wouldn't fill up this fast.

Here is the set of skills tied to this bar.

Here you can see the ability to have one of your party members perform a special action at your own command. This is as close as we are going to get to controlling our party members, but I think it's actually a good thing. I quite like this level of control, as I don't see a reason to switch to them outright. Having the ability to command them to perform a special ability on your command is going to make for interesting tactical moments with really flashy effects.

What reminds me of the E3 trailer is the over the shoulder effect where it looks like you take control of the character for a brief moment to pull off some attack, it feels like you connect with your party in a really cool way and I honestly really love how it looks.

In this video we have Ignis who has the ability to Mark. This allows him to use his ability as a strategist to pick out a target in his range and create a warp point for you to utilize and to strike to that position.

Prompto has his ability Flash Bomb which seems to light up a big area as well as give a stunning effect to any of the enemies in the area providing great crowd control in heavy situations, especially in dark places.

Finally, Gladiolus has the familiar Tempest which sends him flying into a pack of enemies to do massive AoE damage to everyone in his way.

When you use one of these abilities, it depletes one section of the bar.

We see Noctis get into a fucking turret and blow shit up like in that old Versus trailer from years ago and we get a small glimpse of some way of using items on the battle field.

All that I know is that the party abilities mentioned above was flashing in and out a few times before they showed the Items, so could it be bound to the same button somehow? Not really sure.

Finally, one of the last things we see is how Noctis uses magic!

As shown here, Fire is one of his options to chose from in his weapon deck. I actually guessed this is how it would work in a post I made the other day, however, I assumed that you would use a button modifier to access magics separate from weapons. It seems that based on the limited number of magic in XV (Fire, Blizzard and Thunder), there isn't really a need for an entire deck of them, and you could easily swap them out during battle if you needed to which Noctis seems to do in this video off camera. I really like how it's implemented like this, although, I would like to see one additional magic (namely Water) added as well, but perhaps there's still time for that, but it doesn't really matter to me either way, I only really cared about having Fire, Blizzard and Thunder anyway to be honest.

Overall, I'm extremely excited with the footage we got today, I was expecting some great stuff, but honestly when watching the gameplay footage I thought back to Versus and it reminded me of it so much that it overwhelmed me. I'm so happy with where XV has gone over the last few years with Tabata in control. I think a lot of people here can say it's been a bit of a roller coaster. Even though this is just a fucking video game, it's something people have been passionate about since fucking 2006 and it's great to see everything come together in a way that pleases us diehard fans that have been waiting for far too long.

If I missed anything, please let me know and I'll be sure to include it.
Thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed, discussion is highly welcome!

You know something LeonBlade? I don't read your analyses. There extremely long, and I don't have the patience to sit through them, and neither do I have the desire to know every tiny aspect of XV's combat before I even play it.

But you know what? Keep posting them. People are genuinely interested in them, and it's great to see someone putting the effort of analyzing something for others.

Thank you for all who read and enjoy, I appreciate you taking the time to read through my walls of text.

@APZonerunner thanks for splitting the thread off for me, and for your kind words.

@yeah_93 I appreciate it, I know that a lot of this information isn't really important or valued by a lot of people, but I still enjoy using these little bits of information to speculate about other things. So, I appreciate your words of support!

@ChrisB Honestly, I have no clue. I imagine that there might be since it worked on Duscae (I didn't try it so I didn't even think about it). So, if it was in the demo, I'm sure it will be in the final game.

Thanks for writing all of this up, LeonBlade! Going through it once isn't enough; I'll be studying it again when the game is near release.

By the way, about other types of magic: in the TpGS interview held a few hours after the presentation and ATR, Tabata did say that elements other than Fire, Thunder, and Blizzard will be present in FFXV, but he can't reveal them yet. Maybe Water and Aero will be in, too. =)

They only thing I could add to this topic is that
and
seens to be the only buttons to not have a gameplay funtion, yet. If I had to make a guess, they would work as short commands, one for allies command and the other for items.

Yeah, one of my many questions! They also didn't show the touch pad button in use either like it was in Duscae.

Nice job Leon. I'd love to see you make a video version of this somehow.
I can do that, I was actually thinking about doing it to be honest. I'll work on something later I think and see how I like it. I think it would be easier to digest and more entertaining to watch from an analysis point of view. Thank you for your kind words.

Great, great job as always, LeonBlade! I still have to digest everything I've seen and read (especially this thread), but man, my worries about the combat system are basically gone now, it really feels like the game I've wanted for a fucking decade now.

Really liked about everything I saw (the only thing I'm iffy about is the stealth section and even then, it doesn't look too awkard -could be even fun with the warping system and whatnot- and seems completely optional). I'm so happy about the aerial combat, as that was my main worry regarding the combat (since we've known for a while about the inclusion of a manual weapon switching mechanic).

And the magic system looks cool, I feel that the Witcher approach is the right one for this kind of game (less spells allow for more impact, importance and complexity: there are tons of spells I don't use in KH and are just there). But if what Rin says is accurate, I'll be happy too (Aero could be very fun and important with this kind of battle system). And I guess that we'll have white magic such as Cure and stuff like that, so the magic system should be very complete (and I'm not even counting the Noctis' exclusive one).

So yeah, my hype is back to its usual levels now and we still have a lot to see and things we've seen to wonder and make theories about (which is great, since I love these threads!).

Oh, you sure? Which interview? We were just discussing on GAF how many elements there were and Tabata clearly said there would only be 3 elemental magic spells:

Water should be there too, since you can freeze it with blizzard :p
Remember the water scene (at the end) in the lastest tech demo in Shanghai/Malaysia.

As for wind, the wind physics are very well made, simply put an effect and than you have it xD

But what I mostly want are the non-elemental magics like
- Gravit (also really hoping for Diabolos)
- Flare (like fire, but with more red/yellow effect and bigger??)
- Meteor (well there are meteorites crashing on the planet, so it would make sense to implement this)
- Ultima (what should i say, this should def. be in)

Thanks, I knew that already. Where does it say that there will be more elements than Fire, Blizzard, and Thunder, though? I don't see anything like that^^
