Man of Steel

So I finally got round to viewing the most controversial motion picture of last year. The film that created canyon rifts with the audience. Excluding the people in the middle, one side adamantly claims that this is a terrific re-imagination of the tried-and-tested Superman formula into something more complex and yes, dark in dimension than the usual flavour we've all grown up familiar with. Then there is the half who would bury Zack Snyder in a shallow grave alive if they could. I sniffed the controversy and decided with a few friends to sit down and see what the actual fuss is all about.

Then it hit me. Much of the fury surrounding this film is based on what they've done in this reinvention of the titular character. It's taking the well-established Superman mythology and deliberately bending it into something many either can't stand to see in general because it doesn't conform into familiar molds (the usual notion of something being "butchered") or something they feel is an antithesis to what they believe about the character and what this character ought to do or stand for. I am not a big comic hero fan and thus Superman as a cultural icon doesn't form a big part of my identity. If this film grinds my gears in any way, it won't be because they have allegedly "ruined" Superman I know and love.

Man of Steel certainly isn't a character-driven flick. We just don't know Clark Kent as a person. Likewise, neither do we get much of Lois Lane except maybe only surface details. This is where you would feature Clark at his Daily Planet job, but I suppose I can understand why Snyder decided to ignore all that for this particular reimagining. But not having it helps solidify this film's status as a bit of usual summer blockbuster loud, violent escapism. It's a clear absence, and in its stead are these off-putting chronologically-jumbled segments of Clark as a kid, teenager and adult. It confused me at first - don't do this, film directors!

What character insight we do get of Clark I feel to be a bit...unclear? A big deal is made of what he ultimately does to General Zod, though I never received the impression that there was a personal, heightened emotional desire to not take a life. Clark was never truly brought up to believe this - heck, his father hinted that it would have been better if Clark had let the kids in the bus drown instead of exposing his powers. If he truly has no desire to witness deaths being inflicted around him, perhaps he should have done all he could to take the fight with Zod out of the city? Instead of shrugging off the fact that skyscrapers are being wrecked, debris are raining down unstopped on people below, and petrol stations are blowing up? I can understand trying to portray this Superman as someone who is substantially more flawed and less of a perfect, definitive paragon of heroic goodness (which I think is great!), but the handling of his character confuses me at some places, and I can't say I'm that satisfied with it.

Oh well. It's an average-decent film. I don't think it deserves the vitriol it has been receiving, and I can certainly recognise some of the interesting ideas with considerable merit. I've enjoyed it, and I would watch the followup that supposedly has Batman and Wonder Woman.

6/10

Just watched The Wolf of Wall Street. I'm a pretty big Martin Scorsese fan, especially where films of his about immoral, awful fucks doing terrible things are concerned. It's certainly not up there with his absolute best, but for me this is his best film since the mid 90s (specifically, in my mind, since 1995's Casino). That doesn't mean the stuff in the interim has been bad - he just has an utterly incredible back catalogue to compete with.

I'm glad he's back to telling the true story behind criminals. This time rather than gangsters and murderers, it's the professional thieves and embezzlers who ran certain areas of Wall Street in the 80s. Criminals with 2000-dollar suits and a bag of cocaine so hefty it would be enough to get anybody else high for a month - and it'd last them days. It's compelling subject matter. It's based off the autobiography of the protagonist that the actual real man wrote in prison, as well as other witness accounts.

Scorsese's using Leonardo DeCaprio again, and he's quickly becoming his second most frequent collaborator next to De Niro. He's no De Niro, especially compared to him in his prime. Part of me does wish he'd stop using him if I'm entirely honest - but at the same time, Leo is utterly perfect for this role in this film. I never though I'd see the day where Jonah Hill would steal the show, but he does here. Margot Robbie is magnificent as well, and I'm a little bit in love with her after this movie.

Highly recommended.

Last movie I saw was the second Hobbit film. It was... uh, okay. It went on for longer than I thought it would (multiple times I was like "okay they're gonna end if HERE... or not"), and I find it odd that the only thing they're leaving for the end is the Smaug's attack on... that town/Battle of Five Armies (which really isn't even detailed in the book ). I also wonder how/if they'll portray...

Kili's death. I mean they made him semi-important with that silly love triangle crap, so I'm guessing it's gonna be dramatic? Not more dramatic than Thorin's death, I hope, since it's Thorin and all.

Also lol Tauriel

It's not a bad movie, but some things are... sorta weird.

Just watched Ocean Heaven, Chinese Movie from 2010 starring Jet Li. It's not an action movie, surprisingly ahah. It's a drama about a single Father struggle to find a place in the world for his autistic son, very well acted, very emotional without being cheap, I'd recommend everyone to watch it, especially to see Jet Li in a very different role from his normal kind!

The Wolf of Wall Street was really an epic film and my last movie seen. @APZonerunner I can definitely see why Leonardo Dicaprio has become his most frequent collaborator so I completely disagree with you, especially of late.. I really think now that Dicaprio has aged, he now seems more mature to take on any role and in my opinion becoming one of today's best actors out there. This guy is in a league of his own at the moment.. but yes definitely a great movie and (I'm a lot inlove with Margot Robbie after this)

A must watch for most (it is a very sexy movie ) wink* wink*

Captain Phillips: I knew the movie hit home as soon as I realized I was on the edge of my seat. It's sad the protagonist is a little bland: I mean, I can tell, Captain Phillips is a clever man, but not much else. It's a relief Tom Hanks handed the role so well. The movie is well made, and it's worth your time. 3 out of 4.

The Hobbit, the Desolation of Smaug.

I have to say watching it in 3D was sort of creepy. A giant stereoscopic perfectly well spoken Dragon with Cumberbatch's voice is the stuff of nightmares especially when it is looking right-at-you.

I saw How to Train Your Dragon 2. It was disappointing, the first one was much better.
I skipped the first one when it first came out but recently I've kind of been wanting to see both of them.

Just watched Wayne's World. It was really over the top and ridiculous. Which is a good thing. I like over the top and ridiculous.

I've finally watched Brave - Pixar's animation from 2012. Gorgeous visuals and music, engaging story, great message, everything you'd expect from disney. Loved that world of celtic myths and legends.

As it's usually the case with movies that I enjoy, after checking some reviews on imdb I learned that it's the worst movie ever and it completely sucks.
Gotta love you, imdb

Hahahaha. Even though it isn't a bad movie per se, it gets a lot of negative feedback because it's always compared to the rest of the movies from Pixar, and... yeah, it's easily their worst one, sadly.

Really? It's been some time since I watched a Pixar movie but there were a few which impressed me less (Cars, Ratatouille - imho both meh). But whatever.

I just love celtic myths and legends, and that's why I'd like to see a sequel where they'd use that amazing world to its full potential.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

Opening scene was amazing. The rest of it was incredibly uneven. Josh Brolin was incredible and every scene that Mickey Rourke was in was hilarious, but the rest of the cast was not given much to work off of. The main storyline, starring Eva Green, was abysmal. A lot of potentially interesting side stories arose and then dissipated without much explanation. Lady Gaga and the Doc from Back to the Future had great cameos. Joseph Gordon-Levitt had a solid story arc that ended abruptly and disappointingly. Jessica Alba's storyline phoned in a difficult-to-believe happy ending. Alba -- the world's least strippiest stripper -- becomes dark and edgy by cutting up her face with mirror shards and wearing a leather jacket. Under the encouragement of Bruce Willis' ghost, she manages to kill the Big Bad and invalidate the past two hours of the movie as well as the original Sin City.

6/10 - For Rourke, Brolin, and the opening sequence.
