Give it a shot. It tremendously curbstomps even LR gameplay-wise.
From what I've played myself back then - beat KH1 and half of KH2 - it's unfortunately way too floaty for my taste and doesn't feel satisfying to me mechanically (incidently the seemingly similar combat of Versus was one of the only things I wasn't excited for all those years). LR is my all-time favorite FF battle-system, but I don't think I'd call it ARPG. It's a weird ATB-real-time-hybrid-thingy^^ If direct character movement wasn't as limited and slow, and precise positioning was crucial, then I'd say it's an ARPG.

You guys... I'm legit shocked that people are complaining that the battle with Cor was "too difficult" and that "it's a stupid and annoying battle."

I mean... the fuck?

First, people bitch the combat is too easy, and now it's too challenging. People are whining about the fact that Cor was actually hard to beat.

He's the final boss, whose nickname is The Immortal. He should be difficult.

Seriously this fan base can be so void of logic at times that it's embarrassing.

This is how I see people behaving:

"Cor's a badass. I wanna see what he's truly capable of."

*shows his fighting prowess*

"Man fuck this guy. That was bullshit. Fuck you Cor."

I mean... what?
The combat didn't become too challenging because of Cor, it's only 1 DLC, the problem is the game doesn't balance it, it's either too difficult in that one case, or the entire thing is piss easy. There is no middle ground.

LR FFXIII's battle system is the only good battle system in the entire trilogy. The rest of the combat systems are just garbage or mediocre.

no they weren't, they were one of the most praised aspects of the saga. XIII is actually more challenging than your usual FF, and using buffs/debuffs and the right acc is crucial to victory.

LR's combat is god-tier, best of the series for me. Hardest FF since FFV.

FFXIII was hard? I just found it tedious and boring,I just spammed auto-battle most of the way since whatever I would have chosen if I had gone with Abilites would have been chosen for Auto battle anyway, Auto battle is just a way that allows my abilities to be stacked on the ATB bar quicker with only some bosses giving me difficulty and that's because it's difficulty freaking spikes all over the place it's not consistent overall the battle system I put it below the other ATB systems, and definitely below 12(which is probably one of the best implementations of the ATB combat). It's less fun than every single FF game that preceded it. XIII's ATB system was just garbage in my opinion

LR combat is just good, it's not great, it's not god-tier it's just good, better than the other ones? maybe, don't like it as much as 10 that's where I pushed my brain when it came to a FF title, as much as FFVIII, IX. FFVII was probably the one that was the more easier titles for me, but that's mainly because I was pretty overleveled, and I had fun grinding.

@Jubileus The FF fandom can't agree on ANYTHING.

@Koozek I don't mind Overwhelm having attacks that can be avoided given how it provides the largest invincibility frame in the game currently. I look at it as a trade off.

@Storm I really love LR's combat. I am speculating because the game trilogy no longer had mainstream apply they had more room to experiment without heavy backlash. Making the final boss operate different between its normal and plus form is something I'd love to see more in future mainline FF titles.

It's such a stupid reaction since that final trial is one of the most thrilling things to have come out of the FFXV experience.

I don't recall a time in the FF series where a boss actually made my heart race with adrenaline for fear of getting wrecked with instant death at any second, and I had to stay focused and hone my reflexes.

Shit was awesome but they're too busy bitching to fully enjoy it. Damn shame.

Cor is a badass mofo.

The quality ain't that great, but interesting background on Cor.

No, it's not a spoiler since it's a loading screen.

It's usually the characters who come from humble beginnings who have such talent in one area I find.

More on Cor please SE. I wanna know more about the young, hot headed, brash and stubborn Marshal Cor Leonis.

If you think about it, he's lived through 3 generations of the Lucis Caelum dynasty. Cor The Immortal indeed.

Edit: I look at the map and tried to get into the entrance for the dungeon in Episode Gladio. It's close to Taelpar Rest stop.

Let's just say I got ambushed when I got to the entrance... which was blocked.

If people enjoy Lightning Returns's battle system that much, I would recommend playing Valkyrie Profile. It's essentially the same battle system. Tri-Ace, who created the Valkyrie Profile series, also worked on Lightning Returns.

Yeah, always thought so, too. Played VP2, but dropped it when I couldn't beat one of the bosses and wasn't in the mood for grinding. I'm not the biggest VP-expert, but some of the Norse terminology in LR instantly reminded me of VP (Valhalla, Yggdrasil, Lightning having to gather "souls" of people etc.).

I don't know. I'm not holding out hope. Square-Enix doesn't seem interested in giving their older IPs the Triple A treatment like Final Fantasy. Shame.

If they could bring back Star Ocean over 7 after the prior installment release then it's possible that they could do the same with this IP.

well i wouldn't consider VP/VP2 AAA titles exactly, given the unexpected revival of Nier i think it's a possibility, albeit a minor one.

about the dlc, seems like the rock formations of the dungeon were inspired by rock formations found in iceland.

Btw, remember when someone glitched to the Angelgard island where Noctis wakes up and there was this strange cave with the huge swords around it, which people assumed would be where Episode Gladio would take place because of who the boss in the DLC was revealed to be? Turns out it wasn't. Wonder what that's supposed to be.

I have an idea as to what this is, but it's only speculation so should not be taken as fact.

Considering the fact that Noctis woke up on Angelgard after his slumber, I'd say that this place is a prison for Royalty members related to the Lucis line.

The opening line for the chapter even says that this is a prison too.

Those swords could've been used as a part of a "sealing" ritual put in place to make sure that the "imprisoned" stayed there.

Personally, I think the Astrals and the King who betrayed Ardyn locked him here for awhile, before he somehow managed to escape.

Bahamut's sword being there would indicate this as well. The Astral's and Line of King's would've worked together to seal the "Usurper"

When you're ostracizing and demonizing someone, you gotta imprison and keep them somewhere right?

Seeing as how Ardyn likes to "help" Noctis so he could further his own ambitions, I'd say Ardyn knew Noctis was gonna wake up on Angelgard due to past experience, so he made sure to park the boat there so Noctis had a way to come back after he woke up.

That's just my take on it but I think it makes sense.

Forgot to mention (as if it wasn't obvious enough), that certain 4chan rumour mentioning these claims related to the recent update were proven wrong:

Ver 1.06: Chapter 13 adds Gladio as a playable character to this chapter, you go with Ignis the whole time and he needs to be protected. Some new cutscenes are added.

Free Booster Pack: It's coming the first or second week in march, adds the magitek suit for the 4.

DLC Episode Gladio: Adds a full 2-5h Gladiolus experience (depends on the player) with a new dungeon along with Cor leones to make Gladio stronger, by the end you encounter Gilgamesh, a big gear with tons of blades. Also this dungeon will be added to the main game, you can go there with you party but the access to the final boss won't be available, it's only for episode gladiolus. This dungeon won't be accesible unless you have the Gladiolus Episode.

Should be safe to cross the whole thing off like the rest.

Lol I tried to get to the episode Gladiolus dungeon in the main game yesterday but it was completely blocked off by a stone slab and guarded by a pack of Couerls

That Gilgamesh boss fight description was so bs lol

The only one that was accurate was the first one. But you could've guessed that without having to label it as a "leak" by using deduction and logic tbh.
