dear god, so many great scores

http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-4/nier-automata?ref=hp

from 68 to 88, congrats for the team and yoko taro.
Hmmm...Gameinformer's has me raising an eyebrow. The snip version talks about the repetition, but that's not necessarily a bad thing as long as it's entertaining in my book. Also the other point I noticed was how the person said the game is more engaging combat wise but still not fully. I really don't understand where the person is coming from on that point.

So this means we're getting a Drakengard remake, right? Taro is the the Internet's Golden Boy now. It means he can get anything he wants. He wants Drakengard HD.

Nier Automata is a great game, as much as FFXV is a great game. Both has it's ups and downs.

I remember reading. Kosucku (Kotaku) article about how the FFXV UI is rudimentary, but the UI in Nier Automata is even more worse than FFXV (yet no one talks about that). The world map menu is probably one of the worst I've seen and it's a hassle to navigate through, specially having to open the menu to access the map, not only that, you can't even zoom out completely. So you are always stuck with a small portion. Game runs at 60FPS, but not constantly. Network Features turned on will actually cause the frame rate to go haywire at times and it's more noticeable for me personally. Draw distance is crap. Textures look shitty in more places than one. AI partner glitches every (though they tp back to you instantly). It has a variety of issues that not even FFXV has. Story is quite generic, personally for me, the story was more of a... ''soooo didn't see that coming... (sarcasm)''.

Don't get me wrong, I love the game. I haven't touched FFXV since I put in Nier. But I did feel a lot of aspects from FFXV that I missed while playing Nier. Like random lively banters, a lot of the small things like that (I miss the map navigation). But the game is hella fun.

So what's my point? Nier As a series was always average or below, it was never amazing. Not many people had much expectations for this game, that's why most people don't hassle each other with it's issues unlike FFXV. Automata turned out great, with a few technical dips, but the hurdle to jump for the series was never high, or maybe there was never a hurdle to start with. Unlike FF, which set it's bar back in 97, being a longer running series, people tend to complain more with games like that.
Automata has as much issues as FFXV has, some the same, some even worse, yet none of them are being picked up on a wider spectrum like FFXV is going through.

Honestly, XV was revealed too early to the world. If the game had not been revealed until say 2010 or later, it would have been received a lot better. Imagine how much lower the reception would be with Nier:Automata, Horizon:Zero Dawn, and/or The Witcher 3 if they were constantly being brought up in people's faces only to realize it's still no where close to being done. You are correct that the FF series has been around much longer, which at this point has now created situations where certain people question if XV is even a FF game at all. Then nostalgia heavily impacts judgement of a good number of the people as well. I think we can all agree that we wish SE would just STOP announcing games if they aren't going to be ready to release to the market in two years, but they haven't learned that lesson yet as they are repeating it with the FFVII:Remake.

XV and Nier aren't even comparable in my mind. One is a RPG with action elements (or ARPG) and the other is an action hack-n-slash with RPG and STG elements. To even attempt compare the two is totally silly. It's like trying to compare Sonic the Hedgehog with Banjo-Kazooie. You can't. They're very different games doing very different things.

a niche game did with less budget what FFXV should have done in terms of critical reception.
This really isn't a fair statement. XV shouldn't have done anything other than meet its production deadlines and get released. Which it did. Reception from critics and fans are totally out of the developers' hands.

let's not turn this thread into a "har har Nier 2 did this better than FFXV" shitposting fest.
it's not hard to praise something without shitting on something else.

Have you played Nier Automata? It's a not a simple hack and slash like DMC. It's a full action RPG, it has all the RPG elements, in some cases it does better than XV. They are pretty much the same genre.

They are both open world (with the same story limited areas which are unlocked as you progress through the story). You can run around and kill things as you wish, pick up treasures which respawn, do side quests, ride mounts, drift with said mounts. You can fish. You can upgrade weapons. You can upgrade your stats by spending a form of currency. Story driven progression.
You can do all of this in both games.

Or explain how these two games are so vastly different from each other. Visuals don't count, as that means you cannot compare CoD to BF and that's not how this works.

I don't think they're that much comparable either. Their design philosophy isn't very similar outside of open-world (which is a shallow comparison already), the big difference is in combat, which is the crux of the gameplay.

Nier 2 lends itself more to an action game with RPG elements intermittent throughout, you can play Nier 2 as just an action game just fine. Stats and levels aren't forefront.
FFXV on the other hand, is more along the lines of "full action RPG". It requires more forethought when playing, more strategic-based play. There's less room for player flexibility as with Nier 2.

That's just comparing green apples and red apples, they are both apples no matter how you spin it. You wouldn't say that Nier is like DMC or Bayonetta, that's like apples and peaches. Battlefield and CoD are different yes, but they are still essentially a FPS at the core, so it still remains apples vs apples. Would you say Uncharted is a different genre than the Lara Croft reboot?

Except.... Nier 2 actually /is/ like DMC and Bayonetta.
Fast paced combat (like DMC), a real combo system (like DMC), no dial-combos (like DMC). How is it not comparable to those two games? It even has the PG-styled mechanics present in Bayo and all their other action games (witch time/overclock).
Just because they put an open world and a shallow EXP system in the mix doesn't mean that this isn't a PG-style action game at its core with light JRPG elements.

FFXV literally shares none of the above qualities aside from open-world.

Honestly, even if it has some issues, I'm fully expecting Nier to come together stronger than XV. I also vastly prefer the first Nier over FFXIII (which came out at the same time) so you could say the franchise has already beaten FF in my eyes.
